It can also introduce significant environmental impacts depending on the local biophysical conditions and resources required to implement it and, Fon the practices used to manage crops, which could vary widely among growers. Sophisticated methods to account for such variability while assessing direct (on-site) and indirect (up\/down stream) environmental impacts of peri-UA implementation are thus needed. We implemented an attributional, regionalized, cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) for which we derive spatially explicit inventories and calculate 14 impacts due to peri-UA using the ReCiPe method. Further, to show the importance of impact assessment regionalization for the environmental assessment of peri-UA, we regionalize eutrophication impacts characterization. We use the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) to illustrate these methodological developments. Vegetables and greenhouses, the prevalent peri-UA land uses, had the largest impacts assessed, of all peri-UA land uses. European NPK mineral fertilizer production to cover N demand of these crops drives all impacts. For fruit crops, onsite N emissions drive marine eutrophication impacts while for irrigated herbaceous crops, phosphate runoff drives freshwater eutrophication impacts. Geographic variability of peri-UA metabolic flows and impacts was displayed. Management practices at the plots, which are linked the land use, are responsible for impacts variability. Regionalization of eutrophication impacts highlights the importance of accounting for the biophysical aspects at the geographic scale at which peri-UA takes place, which is a much finer scale than those implemented in current regionalization of impact assessment methods in LCA. This study provides a fundamental baseline needed to assess transition scenarios of peri-UA at an appropriate geographic level of analysis and gives essential knowledge to guide appropriate circular and sustainability strategies for the sector.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Catal\u00e0:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">L&#8217;agricultura periurbana (peri-UA) pot subministrar aliments localment i potencialment de manera m\u00e9s sostenible que els sistemes agr\u00edcoles convencionals. Tamb\u00e9 pot generar impactes ambientals significatius en funci\u00f3 de les condicions biof\u00edsiques locals, dels recursos necessaris per implementar-lo i de les pr\u00e0ctiques utilitzades per gestionar els cultius, que poden variar molt entre els productors. Per tant, calen m\u00e8todes sofisticats per tenir en compte aquesta variabilitat mentre s&#8217;avaluen els impactes ambientals directes (in situ) i indirectes (amunt\/avall) de la implementaci\u00f3 peri-UA. En aquest estudi hem implementat una avaluaci\u00f3 del cicle de vida (LCA) atribucional, regionalitzada i del &#8220;cradle-to-gate&#8221; per a la qual obtenim inventaris espacialment expl\u00edcits i calculem 14 impactes deguts al peri-UA mitjan\u00e7ant el m\u00e8tode ReCiPe. A m\u00e9s, per mostrar la import\u00e0ncia de la regionalitzaci\u00f3 de l&#8217;avaluaci\u00f3 d&#8217;impacte per a l&#8217;avaluaci\u00f3 ambiental de la peri-UA, regionalitzem la caracteritzaci\u00f3 dels impactes de l&#8217;eutrofitzaci\u00f3. Hem utilitzat l&#8217;\u00c0rea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) per il\u00b7lustrar aquests desenvolupaments metodol\u00f2gics. Les hortalisses i els hivernacles, els usos predominants del s\u00f2l peri-UA, van tenir els majors impactes avaluats de tots els usos del s\u00f2l peri-UA. La producci\u00f3 europea de fertilitzants minerals NPK per cobrir la demanda de N d&#8217;aquests cultius impulsa tots els impactes. Per als cultius de fruites, les emissions de N in situ provoquen impactes sobre l&#8217;eutrofitzaci\u00f3 marina, mentre que per als cultius herbacis de regadiu, l&#8217;escorrentia de fosfat provoca impactes sobre l&#8217;eutrofitzaci\u00f3 d&#8217;aigua dol\u00e7a. S&#8217;ha mostrat la variabilitat geogr\u00e0fica dels fluxos i impactes metab\u00f2lics peri-UA. Les pr\u00e0ctiques de gesti\u00f3 a les parcel\u00b7les, que estan vinculades a l&#8217;\u00fas del s\u00f2l, s\u00f3n responsables de la variabilitat dels impactes. La regionalitzaci\u00f3 dels impactes de l&#8217;eutrofitzaci\u00f3 posa de manifest la import\u00e0ncia de comptabilitzar els aspectes biof\u00edsics a l&#8217;escala geogr\u00e0fica en qu\u00e8 es produeix el peri-UA, que \u00e9s una escala molt m\u00e9s fina que les implementades en la regionalitzaci\u00f3 actual dels m\u00e8todes d&#8217;avaluaci\u00f3 d&#8217;impacte en l&#8217;ACV.
