Urban agriculture (UA) can help with this effort by producing local crops that are fertilized with nutrients recovered from compost generated from OMSW. This research aims to determine the potential of OMSW compost to supply the nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) demand of UA and the environmental benefits of replacing mineral fertilizer from a life cycle perspective. The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) serves as the case study given its commitment to reuse biowaste according to the Revised Waste Framework Directive and to promote UA as a signing member of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. Based on crop requirements and farmer surveys, we find that the annual NPK demands of the agricultural fields of the AMB that cover 5,500 ha and produce 70,000 tons of crops are approximately 769, 113, and 592 tons of NPK, respectively. Spatial material flow analysis and life cycle assessment were applied to found that the current waste management system can potentially substitute 8 % of the total NPK demanded by UA with compost, reduce the impacts by up to 39 % and yield savings in global warming of 130 %. The more ambitious future scenario of 2025 can potentially substitute 21 % of the total NPK demand and reduce environmental impacts up to 1,049 %, depending on the category considered. Avoiding processing of mixed OMSW, mineral fertilizer replacement and cogeneration of electricity from biogas are the major contributors to these environmental savings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Catal\u00e0:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Les ciutats s\u2019enfronten als reptes de subministrar aliments i gestionar els residus s\u00f2lids municipals org\u00e0nics (RSMO) de manera sostenible enmig de les creixents taxes d\u2019urbanitzaci\u00f3. L\u2019agricultura urbana (AU) pot ajudar en aquest esfor\u00e7 produint cultius locals fertilitzats amb nutrients recuperats del compost generat a partir dels RSMO. Aquesta investigaci\u00f3 t\u00e9 com a objectiu determinar el potencial del compost de RSMO per satisfer la demanda de nitrogen-f\u00f2sfor-potassi (NPK) de l\u2019AU i els beneficis ambientals de substituir el fertilitzant mineral des d\u2019una perspectiva de cicle de vida. L\u2019\u00c0rea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) serveix com a estudi de cas donat el seu comprom\u00eds de reutilitzar els bioresidus segons la Directiva Marc de Residus Revisada i de promoure l\u2019AU com a membre signant del Pacte de Pol\u00edtica Aliment\u00e0ria Urbana de Mil\u00e0. Basant-nos en els requisits dels cultius i en enquestes als agricultors, hem trobat que les demandes anuals de NPK dels camps agr\u00edcoles de l\u2019AMB que cobreixen 5.500 ha i produeixen 70.000 tones de cultius s\u00f3n aproximadament 769, 113 i 592 tones de NPK, respectivament. Es va aplicar l&#8217;an\u00e0lisi de flux de materials espacial i l\u2019avaluaci\u00f3 del cicle de vida per trobar que el sistema actual de gesti\u00f3 de residus pot potencialment substituir el 8 % del total de NPK demandat per l\u2019AU amb compost, reduir els impactes fins a un 39 % i generar estalvis en escalfament global del 130 %. L\u2019escenari futur m\u00e9s ambici\u00f3s de 2025 pot potencialment substituir el 21 % de la demanda total de NPK i reduir els impactes ambientals fins a un 1.049 %, depenent de la categoria considerada.
