The revival of local agricultural production is often lauded as a potential nature-based solution. However, an expansion of peri-urban agriculture (peri-UA) may entail significant ecosystem trade-offs. This study explores the impacts on the food-water-climate nexus of different scenarios of peri-urban agricultural expansion in a semi-arid, Mediterranean climate, addressing local food provision, freshwater use, local temperature regulation, global climate change mitigation, and the trade-offs thereof. We estimate food provision and irrigation water requirements based on a georeferenced urban metabolism approach along with atmospheric and biosphere models to examine four land-use scenarios in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Our study reveals that a 31 % (+17.27 km2) and 115 % (+64.25 km2) increase in the current peri-UA in the AMB, results in an increase in local food production of 24 % (+16,503 tons year\u22121) and 86 % (+58,940 tons year\u22121), and irrigation water requirements by 10.0 % (+3.2 hm3) and 43.5 % (+14.1 hm3), respectively. The expansion of irrigated peri-UA potentially reduces near-surface temperatures by 0.7 \u00b0C, albeit temperature reductions in the densest urban areas are minimal. Since the additional peri-UA is achieved by replacing natural non-forested and forest areas, the simulations predict reductions in the net ecosystem productivity of up to 18.5 % and total carbon stocks by 3.3 %. This integrated approach combining urban metabolism and atmospheric modelling to determine the trade-offs appears to be a promising tool for informing land-use decision-making in the context of urban climate adaptation and mitigation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Catal\u00e0:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Reducci\u00f3 d&#8217;emissions, mitigaci\u00f3 de la calor i millora de l&#8217;acc\u00e9s a la provisi\u00f3 d&#8217;aigua i aliments s\u00f3n reptes cada cop m\u00e9s cr\u00edtics per a les zones urbanes en el context de l&#8217;adaptaci\u00f3 i mitigaci\u00f3 del canvi clim\u00e0tic global. Aquest estudi explora els impactes en el nexe aliments-aigua-clima de diferents escenaris d&#8217;expansi\u00f3 de l&#8217;agricultura periurbana en un clima semi\u00e0rid mediterrani, abordant la provisi\u00f3 d&#8217;aliments locals, l&#8217;\u00fas d&#8217;aigua dol\u00e7a, la regulaci\u00f3 de la temperatura local, la mitigaci\u00f3 del canvi clim\u00e0tic global i els compromisos associats. Estimem la provisi\u00f3 d&#8217;aliments i els requeriments d&#8217;aigua de reg a partir d&#8217;un enfocament de metabolisme urb\u00e0 georeferenciat juntament amb models atmosf\u00e8rics i de biosfera per examinar quatre escenaris d&#8217;\u00fas del s\u00f2l a l&#8217;\u00c0rea Metropolitana de Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">El nostre estudi revela que un augment del 31 % (+17,27 km\u00b2) i del 115 % (+64,25 km\u00b2) en l&#8217;actual peri-UA a l&#8217;AMB resulta en un increment de la producci\u00f3 d&#8217;aliments locals del 24 % (+16.503 tones any\u22121) i del 86 % (+58.940 tones any\u22121), i dels requeriments d&#8217;aigua de reg del 10,0 % (+3,2 hm\u00b3) i del 43,5 % (+14,1 hm\u00b3), respectivament. L&#8217;expansi\u00f3 de la peri-UA irrigada potencialment redueix les temperatures properes a la superf\u00edcie en 0,7 \u00b0C, tot i que les reduccions de temperatura en les \u00e0rees urbanes m\u00e9s densament poblades s\u00f3n m\u00ednimes. Com que la peri-UA addicional s&#8217;aconsegueix substituint \u00e0rees naturals amb i sense bosc, les simulacions prediuen una reducci\u00f3 en la productivitat neta dels ecosistemes de fins a un 18,5 % i de les reserves totals de carboni en un 3,3 %.
