This study examines the short-term health effects of air pollution during a two-week heatwave in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area under different land use scenarios: expansion of urban parks (S1), increased agricultural land (S2), and intensified urban development (S3). Using high-resolution air quality modelling we applied a quantitative health impact assessment to analyse the changes in air pollutant concentrations (NO2, O3, PM2.5, PM10), their attributable mortality and compliance with WHO air quality standards. The results show that while NO2 and PM-related mortality decreased slightly in the agriculture (S2) and parks scenarios (S3), ozone-attributable mortality displayed a complex, non-linear pattern. The urban expansion (S1) scenario led to fewer ozone-related deaths despite a marginal rise in O3 concentrations. Compliance with WHO guidelines remained consistent for NO2 and PM, but ozone levels exceeded recommended limits in all scenarios. Spatial analyses identified heterogeneous clusters of pollution-related mortality, shaped by temperature variations and local land use patterns. These findings highlight the intricate relationship between land use changes, air quality, and public health, emphasizing the need for integrated urban planning strategies that consider both pollutant-specific responses and meteorological conditions. Future research should incorporate real-time exposure response functions and high-resolution urban modelling to improve health impact assessments and inform sustainable urban development policies.

Spatial distribution of the attributable deaths (%) of air pollution at the AMB for the S1 (urban) scenario.

Title: Assessing the Short-Term Air Quality Health Impact from Land-Use Changes During Heatwaves: A Health Impact Assessment in Barcelona Metropolitan Area /
Heatwaves amplify air pollution, increasing public health risks, particularly in urban areas where land use influences the distribution of pollutants.
