This globally attended event, now in its 2025 edition, brought together experts and urban practitioners to explore the theme: “Renaturing Cities: Restoring Ecosystems and Building Urban Resilience.”

The session focused on how cities around the world are beginning to reintegrate nature into the urban fabric, not only to address the growing challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity, but also to create healthier and more livable environments. It emphasized both strategic planning and localized, innovative solutions for embedding biodiversity into city development.

Professor Villalba presented the work of the NUTRISOIL project, which is developing regenerative approaches for urban soils through the reuse of organic urban waste, such as pruning residues. Her talk highlighted the technical strategies for improving soil health and nutrient absorption, as well as the broader vision of fostering urban circularity by linking waste management, urban agriculture, and food system resilience.

Building on insights from the ERC-funded URBAG project, NUTRISOIL also incorporates a strong social dimension, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders—urban farmers, policymakers, waste managers, and researchers—to co-create actionable strategies for sustainable nutrient cycles in cities. Professor Villalba shared outcomes from workshops and field studies that demonstrate the potential of this integrated approach to enhance both ecological and social resilience in urban systems.

The session also featured María Angélica Mejía, Regional Curator for Latin America and the Caribbean at The Nature of Cities, who presented the BiodiverCities initiative. Her talk explored how cities can restore urban nature, strengthen green economies, and foster citizen engagement through participatory science.

Professor Villalba’s participation reflects the growing international recognition of her work in the fields of urban metabolism, resource optimization, and circular systems. Her research continues to inform new pathways for sustainable urban transformation in Europe and beyond.

The recording of the session will be made publicly available soon — stay tuned!

[pdf-embedder url="https://webs.uab.cat/atmosphere/wp-content/uploads/sites/692/2025/06/Vilallba_RenaturingCities-Corregit.pdf%22]
