The monthly seminar series, hosted by Penn State’s Earth-Atmosphere Interactions Lab(USA), aims to foster knowledge exchange and promote international collaboration on the GHG monitoring and estimation.

Urban greenery such as urban parks, green roofs and street trees provides multiple social-ecosystem benefits, including reduction of urban CO₂ emissions through photosynthetic uptake and carbon sequestration. However, the effectiveness of urban greenery in reducing CO₂ emissions remains uncertain, particularly in metropolitan areas where anthropogenic sources—such as transportation, industry, and households—interact with biogenic processes. Moreover, human-related vegetation management activities (e.g., mowing, irrigation, pruning, and fertilizing) are also associated with biogenic CO₂ emission.

Qing Luo’s work quantifies the CO₂ uptake by urban greenery in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) using the Vegetation Photosynthesis and Respiration Model (VPRM). Her study provides a framework for improving the quantification of urban biogenic CO₂ emission. The presentation highlighted the importance for assessing the contribution of biogenic component to the total carbon budget across cities, which is critical for supporting more effective planning and policy strategies that leverage urban greenery for climate mitigation.

The recording of the talk is accessible here

[pdf-embedder url="https://webs.uab.cat/atmosphere/wp-content/uploads/sites/692/2025/06/GHG-seminarpresentation_Qing-2×1-1.pdf%22]

Català

El 4 de juny, Qing Luo va presentar el seu treball al seminari sobre gasos d’efecte hivernacle (GEH) urbans, centrant-se en el paper de la vegetació en la reducció de les emissions de CO₂.
