We are happy to share that Dr Sara Mart\u00edn-Alegre will be joining the upcoming International Conference on Transcultural Adaptations: Literature Beyond Borders and Toward Peace<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Sara Mart\u00edn will deliver her paper “From Cormac McCarthy\u2019s Novel to Manu Larcenet\u2019s Graphic Novel: (Re)Designing The Road<\/em> With Colour.”<\/strong> In her intervention, Dr Sara Mart\u00edn will address Manu Larcenet’s La Route<\/em> (2024), an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road <\/em>(2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larcenet, who scripted, drew, and coloured La route<\/em>, while following McCarthy\u2019s plot rather faithfully, offers readers a distinct visual and artistic impression of the novel\u2019s world-building. Dr Mart\u00edn argues that Larcenet (re)designs McCarthy\u2019s world-building as the main strategy to adapt The Road<\/em> with a clever, relevant use of colour. Drawing a parallel with film or TV, Larcenet acts as director, scriptwriter and, above all, production designer of his graphic novel. In this way, a dialogue is established with McCarthy\u2019s original novel, with Larcenet re-interpreting The Road<\/em>\u2019s gritty, grey atmosphere and landscape by mostly excluding nature to focus on the representation of human-made constructions and the destruction of the human bodies found in them, turning McCarthy\u2019s world-building into a far more anthropocentric, far less post-human environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
