In our latest work, we report a photoinduced radical cascade that enables the efficient synthesis of tetrahydrofurans bearing three consecutive stereocenters.
By harnessing the unique dual reactivity of trifluoromethyl thianthrenium triflate, we combine trifluoromethylation, cyclization, and nucleophilic trapping in a one-pot process. Beyond the synthetic method, DFT calculations revealed how subtle hydrogen-bonding interactions govern the observed diastereoselectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re happy to start 2026 by presenting our new report on the use of thianthrenium salts for the synthesis of valuable heterocycles. A visible-light-driven strategy based on a novel EDA complex enables efficient access to a broad range of lactones and tetrahydrofurans, including challenging alkyl and aryl substrates. We are happy to announce our new paper, \u201cThe Power of Catalytic Centers and Ascorbate in Boosting the Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance of TpDTz 2D-COF,\u201d published in Journal of the American Chemical Society<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this work, we show how controlled catalytic centers and the choice of sacrificial electron donor strongly enhance charge transfer and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in 2D covalent organic frameworks. By optimizing catalysts and excitation conditions, we achieve benchmark hydrogen evolution rates above 100,000 \u03bcmol H2<\/sub> g\u207b\u00b9 h\u207b\u00b9, including highly efficient platinum-free systems. Congrats to everyone!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
