It examines how this expressive art form is both preserved as a key symbol of Portuguese identity and transformed into a cultural product shaped by tourism, commercial markets, and cultural policy. Based at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and supported by archival research and fieldwork, the project includes a comparative perspective with related traditions such as flamenco. Its main objectives are to assess the sustainability of Fado’s traditional features, to examine its institutional and market frameworks, and to understand cross-border heritage dynamics, while also strengthening qualitative research methods and expertise in cultural policy and creative industries.

The project Fado between Tradition and Market: Rethinking Heritage Music in Iberia’s Cultural Economy (FADO-ME) explores how Fado, Portugal’s iconic musical tradition and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2011, is being reshaped within the contemporary cultural economy of the Iberian Peninsula and the global music industry.
