The UAB holds the HR Excellence in Research distinction since 2014, reflecting its commitment to high-quality research careers. Within this framework, GBBE provides a structured and internationally-oriented training environment for early-career researchers. Doctoral candidates are enrolled in the PhD Program in Genetics (UAB) or in the interuniversity PhD Program in Bioinformatics (UAB, UPC, UdG, UdL, UOC, UVic, URV, UB), both with strong international projection.
Training includes:
- Transversal training, competitions and awards
- Scientific writing and publication in high-impact journals
- Regular participation in national and international conferences
- Weekly meetings and journal clubs
- Biweekly seminar series
- Annual department scientific meetings
- Occasional SGR scientific retreats
- International research stays (e.g., the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL, Heidelberg), the Université Claude Bernard (Lyon), the Institut de Génétique Humaine (Montpellier), the University of Arizona, and the University College London)
- Participation in teaching and outreach
Over four decades, more than 50 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers have been trained in the group, many now holding academic or industry positions worldwide (e.g., the University of Arizona, the University Medical Center Utrecht, the University of Lisbon, the University of Liverpool, the RIKEN iTHEMS Japan, Clarivate, and Made of Genes).
