Senior members
Prof. José Luis Bourdelande
José Luis Bourdelande graduated in Chemistry (BSc) in 1976 at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, Spain), where he also completed his doctorate (PhD) in the same area in 1981 under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Sánchez-Ferrando and Josep Font Cierco. Between 1981 and 1983 he did a postdoctoral stay at the University of Alberta (Canada) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Otto P. Strausz studying intermediates of photochemical reactions trapped and isolated at low temperatures. Since 1985 he has been a senior member of the Department of Chemistry at UAB, first as an Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry (until 2006) and later as a Full Professor in Organic Chemistry. During this time his research has focused on organic synthesis and, mainly, on photochemistry. In this second field, he has adapted a Laser Flash Photolysis equipment for the study of samples in the solid phase. He was Visiting Professor during short periods of time in: a) University of Technology in Loughborough (UK), under the supervision of Prof. Francis Wilkinson, and b) Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina), under the supervision of Dr Enrique San Román.
Prof. Iluminada Gallardo
Iluminada Gallardo graduated and received her PhD in Chemistry from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in the area of molecular electrochemistry. She carried out further studies in this field as post- doctoral researcher at the University of Paris VII, under the direction of Prof. J.M. Saveant and Prof. C.P. Andrieux. In 1987 she started her academic career as associate professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and since 2007 she is full professor at the UAB. Prof. Gallardo received in 2008 the CIDETEC Award for the more distinguished publication of the Electrochemistry Group of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry and the Prize for the Excellence in Research of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in 2008. She has also and coordinated a considerable number of research projects funded by public agencies as well as industrial projects. Finally, Prof. Gallardo was president of the Specialised Electrochemistry Group (GEE) of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) from 2016 to 2021, since 2003 she is the Coordinator of “Electrochemistry: Science and Technology” Doctoral Program that involves 10 Spanish universities.
Prof. Jordi Marquet
Jordi Marquet received his PhD in Chemistry from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, Spain) under the supervision of Prof. Marcial Moreno-Mañas. After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Florida (USA) in the group of Prof. Alan Katritzky (Heterocyclic Chemistry and Reaction Mechanisms), and another one in the University of Leiden (The Netherlands) in the group of Dr. Cyril Varma (Photochemistry and Photophysics), he became Full Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Chemistry Department of UAB in 1993. His research interests had been focused over the years on the study of fundamental aspects of chemical reactivity, especially the activation of chemical processes by environmentally-friendly methods (Photochemistry, Electrochemistry and Catalysis). In the last few years this interest has shifted to the study of new and more efficient methods of polymer synthesis, and to the design of new polymeric materials with special properties. He has also been a consultant for chemical companies and promoted the creation of a Joint Research Centre UAB-Henkel in the UAB (2011-2020), where he acted as co-coordinator from the UAB. He has held different senior management positions, and among them, he has been responsible of the “Technology Transfer and Innovation” policy of the UAB for 7 years as a Vicerector and Director of the “UAB Research Park”. He has more than 120 publications in international journals, he has supervised 15 doctoral thesis and holds 14 registered patents. After about 40 years of service at UAB, he retired in 2021.
