The Thesis Committee was impressed by Ferran&#8217;s presentation and defense of his PhD work, which dealt with the fabrication of colorimetric labels for detecting cold chain interruption in food packaging. Cristina gave an excellent defense of her PhD work, which focused on the development of new photoresponsive, UV-protecting components for sunscreens. In this work, which was developed in collaboration with the group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macroarc.org\/team\/prof-christopher-barner-kowollik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prof. Barner-Kowollik<\/a> at the Queensland University of Technology (Australia) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany), we report the development of photoswitchable active esters based on dithienylethenes. Two-color control of amidation reactions is achieved with these compounds &#8211; i.e., they are promoted under UV irradiation and inhibited with red light, a behavior that we exploited to light-control chemical ligation for dye functionalization, gelation and polymer film patterning. This year&#8217;s edition of the &#8220;Vag\u00f3 de la Ci\u00e8ncia&#8221; focuses on the consumption of fossil fuels, its environmental, health and economic impact, and the initiatives devised to reduce their use. GEFRO&#8217;s contribution to this exhibition is a novel smart windows technology developed in collaboration with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/nanosfun-research-group_we-are-glad-to-share-that-four-smart-window-activity-7244132860020801537-1Evf?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nanosfun group at ICN2<\/a>, which allows increasing energy efficiency in buildings and vehicles. In collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/nanosfun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nanosfun<\/a> (ICN2-BIST), in this work we describe a novel strategy for the fabrication of fluorescent 3D and 4D codes capable of high density and high security encryption data storage. Our approach makes use of microstructured dye-paraffin mixtures, with which pixel arrays can be prepared that exhibit stimuli-responsive and multicolor emission. In this work developed in collaboration between the group of Prof. Evamarie Hey-Hawkins at the University of Leipzig and our group, we report the preparation of a novel phosphine ligand connected to two dithienylethene photoswitchable units, which shows the largest electronic modulation reported to date upon irradiation . Through the combined effort of an international consortium led by<strong> Dr. Gonzalo Guirado<\/strong>, Confeti aims at developing a lab-scale validated autonomous technology to capture and photo-electrochemically convert CO<sub>2<\/sub> and N<sub>2<\/sub> directly from air or flue gases to urea, which will be produced and delivered in situ in the agricultural fields. In this work we report the preparation of spiropyran-functionalized hydrogels  that undergo selective, reversible and quantifiable color changes upon CO<sub>2<\/sub> absorption, which can be reverted upon irradiation with visible light. This makes our spiropyran-based chromic hydrogels promising systems for the colorimetric monitorization of carbon dioxide in a diversity of applications. In collaboration with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nanosfun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nanosfun<\/a> (ICN2-BIST), in this work we describe a novel methodology for the preparation of smart windows based on the use of paraffin-polymer nanocomposites that show large modulation of light transparency upon thermal, photothermal and electrothermal heating. As a result, these materials exhibit efficient regulation of solar heating indoors for different weather conditions. This, in combination with their low cost, facile fabrication, ample tunability and high photostability and flexibility, makes our technology very appealing for the smart glass market. Together with the company&#8217;s CTO Dr. \u00c0lex Juli\u00e0-L\u00f3pez, <strong>Dr. Jordi Hernando<\/strong> has been representing <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.distinkt.tech\/\" target=\"_blank\">Distinkt<\/a>, a spin-off recently launched by GEFRO and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nanosfun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nanosfun<\/a> (ICN2-BIST) researchers to apply nanotechnology to security inks. <strong>Ferran Crugeira<\/strong>, a joint industrial PhD student in our group, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nanosfun.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nanosfun<\/a> (ICN2-BIST) and the company <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.color-sensing.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\">ColorSensing<\/a>, has been presenting the work he does on the development of smart inks for food packaging. Applications<\/em><strong>\u201c.<\/strong>&nbsp;The Thesis was conducted within the UAB Doctoral Program in Chemistry and supervised by <strong>Prof. Rosa M\u00aa Sebasti\u00e1n<\/strong> in our group. The Thesis Committee, formed by Dr. Raquel Andreu (Universidad de Zaragoza), Prof. Daniel Ruiz-Molina (ICN2-BIST) and Dr. Elisabeth Torres (Berry Global, Inc.), were impressed by Kevin&#8217;s developments on the use of the photothermal properties of benzoxazines and polybenzoxazines in multiple applications.
