Seminar of the Research Group in Geography and Gender: Racism and LGTBIQ+ Perspective in Barcelona’s Urban Planning
On November 8th, the Research Group in Geography and Gender organized its first seminar of the year. The event featured Cristina Rodríguez Reche, postdoctoral researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and Gonzalo Carmona, architect and PhD candidate in Geography.
Cristina Rodríguez presented her research on the impact of morophobia in Barcelona, addressing how racialized women, daughters of immigrants or mixed couples, experience and resist everyday racism. Her analysis, based on in-depth interviews, highlighted the emotions and strategies that emerge in response to discrimination, including reactivity and normalization.
On the other hand, Gonzalo Carmona shared his PhD research “Cities with Pride,” focused on the inclusion of LGTBIQ+ perspectives in urban planning. The study emphasizes the need for urban management that integrates the experiences and needs of the LGTBIQ+ population, an area where Barcelona has been a pioneer.
This seminar provided an enriching opportunity to share research and critical perspectives on how identities and intersectionality shape everyday experiences, emotions, the city, and its policies.
