On March 28th, the Research Group on Geography and Gender organized the third seminar of the academic year. A day dedicated to reflecting on the intersection of gender, geography, and urban policies.
The seminar featured a keynote lecture by Joos Droogleever Fortuijn, professor at the Department of Geography, Planning, and International Studies at the University of Amsterdam, who presented on “The changing concept of gender in Anglophone international geographical journals, 2013-2024.” In her talk, she analyzed the evolution of the concept of gender in 46 international geography journals over the past 12 years, highlighting how the focus has shifted from a women-centered perspective to a broader vision that includes diverse identities and categories. She also addressed the distribution of authorship by gender and geographic origin, as well as the increase in publications by authors from non-English-speaking countries.
Following this, Chiara Bergonzini, a PhD candidate at the University of Milan-Bicocca, presented her research titled “Food transition, urban governance, and gender equality: the role of interstitial space between alternative food networks and urban food policies in Milan and Barcelona.” Her presentation delved into the relationship between urban governance, alternative food networks, and gender equality in two major European cities, providing a detailed analysis of the role played by interstitial space between these domains.
This seminar was an opportunity to explore key topics on the intersection of gender, geography, and urban policies in an international context.
