
Dr Zhongzhong Wang is an environmental engineer and research scientist specialised in microbial technology and in energy and resource recovery from solid organic waste. He obtained his PhD in November 2022 at the University of Galway, Ireland, and is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral researcher in the GICOM group at the UAB. His research focuses on enhancing a psychrophilic anaerobic membrane bioreactor using nanomaterials (Nano4PAnMBR) for the sustainable recovery of bioenergy from organic waste, a project funded under the Horizon Europe framework. His work is centred on improving the efficiency of anaerobic digestion under low-temperature conditions through the integration of nanomaterials (for example, nanoscale ZVI) and membrane bioreactors, contributing to the development of advanced and sustainable bioenergy technologies. In addition, he explores solid-state fermentation and resource recovery from organic waste, with the aim of developing innovative biotechnological solutions that promote a circular bioeconomy.
Beyond bioenergy research, Dr Wang investigates autotrophic denitrification using pyrite, assessing its potential for nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment systems. His research interests also include advanced wastewater treatment and reuse technologies, with a focus on developing sustainable and efficient solutions for water reclamation. His work seeks to advance the fields of environmental biotechnology, microbial process engineering and sustainable resource management, addressing key challenges in waste-to-energy conversion and wastewater treatment.
