The GICOM Research Group has extensive experience in determining gaseous emissions generated in waste treatment processes. We are able to quantify emissions of:

  • Greenhouse gases (such as CO₂, CH₄ and N₂O).
  • Ammonia (NH₃).
  • Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S).
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from various families.
  • Odours, using field dynamic olfactometry.

We have carried out these studies in composting processes, from laboratory to industrial scale, as well as in closed and open waste treatment and valorisation facilities, providing applied knowledge to improve waste management.

Analysis of diffuse emissions in landfills

We have developed a specific methodology to quantify diffuse emissions, especially methane, in landfills. This protocol has already been applied, in collaboration with the Catalan Waste Agency, to conduct a large-scale study to quantify methane emissions from all landfills in Catalonia. This project will contribute to better management of the biogas generated and to the reduction of the associated environmental impact.
