We specialize in process control and monitoring, developing innovative techniques to ensure a more efficient and sustainable composting process.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Control and Optimization of Composting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We have refined respirometry techniques with three main objectives:<br>\u2714 To monitor biological activity during the process.<br>\u2714 To assess the stability of the final compost.<br>\u2714 To determine the aerobic biodegradability of different organic wastes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have several dynamic respirometers available for research and for collaborations with companies and public administrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Environmental Impact of Composting<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to optimizing the process, we study its environmental impact and compare it with other biological waste treatment technologies.<br>Our research has enabled us to quantify greenhouse gas emissions based on experimental data collected from full-scale municipal solid waste treatment plants and landfills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Current Research Lines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2714 Effect of biochar on composting: emissions and final product quality.<br>\u2714 Community and domestic composting.<br>\u2714 Biodegradability studies of wastes, products, and new materials.<br>\u2714 Combined composting and anaerobic digestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Research Lines<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2714 Development of a controller based on Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate (SOUR).<br>\u2714 Image analysis techniques to estimate compost stability.<br>\u2714 Application of compost for soil bioremediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working Scales<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We conduct research at different scales, allowing us to study the process from fundamental science to industrial application:<br>\ud83e\uddea Laboratory: controlled experiments for process optimization.<br>\u2699\ufe0f Pilot plant: medium-scale trials to validate results.<br>\ud83c\udfed Industrial plants: field studies under real-world conditions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our research group is focused on the improvement and optimization of the composting process, both at laboratory scale and in full-scale industrial facilities.
