The researcher Dr Antoni Abat will participate as a panelist in the “Latin American Workshop on Advisory Opinions on Climate Change”.
The organization of this event is in charge of the Center for Environmental Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile, NGO FIMA, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vanuatu and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, which is sponsored from FILE Foundation (Foundation for International Law for the Environment).
In the context of the climate crisis, the co-organizers have conceived this initiative with the objective of providing tools and skills, both legal and technical, to the representatives of Latin American States for the preparation, presentation and monitoring of Advisory Opinions on Climate Change of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), with a particular focus from and for the region. The above is relevant since the President of the ICJ invited the Member States
of the UN to present written comments on this matter, until March 22, 2024, offering a second opportunity to delve deeper and comment on these positions until next June 24. At a later date, in accordance with the rules of procedure, the Court will offer the opportunity to States to present their positions in an oral hearing on a date to be determined.
This workshop joins a series of events, promoted by the Republic of Vanuatu and FILE Foundation, which seek to strengthen regional capacities on climate change, from a legal and scientific perspective, as well as to constitute a meeting space and exchange of experiences between States. International experts will participate in different panels to provide their perspectives, also seeking to generate an environment of international cooperation and of synergy.
The event will take place between May 6 and 7, 2024, in the Matilde Brandau room of the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile, located at Avenida Santa María 076, 6th floor, in the city of Santiago, Chile. .
