Our GLOBAL INTEL member Dr Anna Ayuso has participated in the Final session of the Course on the Current State of Spanish Foreign Policy
It has consisted of a Roundtable to understand the future of trade relations between Spain, the European Union, and MERCOSUR. The issue of debate was “What will Spain’s role be in this context?” and “Can the EU take advantage of this situation to relaunch its relationship with Latin America?”
In the debate there were presentations by:
– Jose Luis Garcia Galan, Deputy Director General for MERCOSUR and Ibero-American Multilateral Organizations (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation – SEPICEM).
- Dr. Anna Ayuso, Senior Researcher at CIDOB (Barcelona Center for International Affairs) and Professor at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies.

The highlights of the event were:
✅ The EU seeks to diversify its partners in the context of the US-China trade war, but Latin America, especially Mexico and MERCOSUR, are consolidating their position as strategic regions.
✅ The EU is positioning itself as a global regulatory player, promoting the adoption of shared standards that reinforce a more balanced trading system.
✅ Ties with CELAC are being strengthened as part of the EU’s effort to respond positively to new forms of bi-regional cooperation.
