From an interdisciplinary perspective, AFRONTA has developed a range of training and awareness-raising resources aimed at promoting a critical and reflective view of vulnerability and the discourses that surround it. Among the topics addressed are, for example, the impact of disinformation and fake news on the construction of social perceptions and the need to use verification tools, together with other resources oriented toward critical reflection, media literacy, discourse analysis, and understanding the factors that shape vulnerability. The materials combine diverse formats—infographics, audiovisual resources, customized search engines, teaching proposals, educational playful activities, awareness capsules, among others—to facilitate self-learning processes and support professionals, educators, and communities working with children and young people. All resources are openly accessible on the project’s website, and many are also available in the UAB’s DDD repository, which facilitates their consultation, reuse, and dissemination. The objective is to provide conceptual and practical tools that enable an understanding of the complexity of situations of vulnerability and to foster more inclusive, conscious, and transformative intervention strategies.

2025

November 25th, 2025. Agtech trajectories: tracing the social lives of digital farming technologies. Industry and policy stakeholders tout digital agriculture as the possibility to “feed the world with less” – less resources, inputs, pesticides, human labor, and detrimental environmental impacts than the current food system. Critics in turn argue that rather than revolutionizing food systems, digital agriculture is merely reinforcing the existing industrial agriculture model through new technological means, and fostering data grabs and surveillance agriculture. This raises the question: how will new digital farming technologies – or “agtech” – shape the future of food, and is there a third trajectory beyond the optimistic hype and dystopian warnings? This presentation sketches out a new approach to understanding digital food futures by introducing the concept of “agtech trajectories”. Drawing inspiration from the “follow the thing” literature and decolonial approaches, the concept of agtech trajectories bridges STS and political economy approaches, while also serving as a methodological tool to examine the “social lives” of digital farming technologies. In this way, the concept offers a new approach to understanding digital food futures by tracing the trajectories digital farming technologies take from their inception and development, through to their various potential applications – which often diverge as technologies are adapted, used, and modified by different actors across diverse contexts. In this way, the concept of agtech trajectories allows us to shift the focus away from individual applications in homogenous settings. Instead, it offers an open and more dynamic approach inclusive of the unexpected, unintended, and potentially messy trajectories that digital farming technologies might take as they move across, evolve, and interact with diverse sociocultural and bio-material contexts. Based on empirical research across Australia, the US, Germany, and Italy, this presentation will then explore how such an approach could empirically look like if employed in the Mediterranean. Given its agricultural diversity and the critical importance of its food systems, the Mediterranean can serve as both a “living laboratory” for the promises of the agtech sector and an ideal setting to explore the multiplicity of possible agtech trajectories.

October 15th, 2025. Parir en el Oriente Colombiano. Methodologically, it proposes the use of an ethnographic and historiographical lens in a territory where environmental conservation policies and renewable energy generation have intersected for four decades. The case study is located in the town of Tarifa, Andalusia, a rural territory that was transformed into a natural frontier and a source of renewable resources following the creation of Spain’s first wind farm network and two protected areas of the Andalusian Network of Natural Protected Areas (RENPA). For this exploration, energy infrastructure and conservation are understood as an object of empirical and ethnographic analysis, seeking to understand their impact on the daily life and future of rural populations, as well as on the environmental subjectivation of a rural territory transformed into a landscape of the “green transition.” The aim is to understand the role played by energy infrastructure and other agents (human and non-human) in the production and renewal of Green Transition policies, evaluating their effects on the (re) and dis)articulation of the economic, social, political, and material territory.

March 5, 2025. 50 años de la comunidad china en España: retos y perspectiva. Based on a case-study in a Bassari community, this work examines the processes driving transformations in agricultural production and crop portfolios by asking how crop diversity and related knowledge and practices change, why they change, who is affected, and what are the implications for resilience in the face of climate change.
Using data from in-depth interviews, focus groups, archival documents, observations, and a systematic seed circulation survey, I argue that theabandonment of these crops results from a combination of demographic, political, and economic factors. National and international policies anddevelopment interventions together with market forces and historicallegacies, intersect with outmigration, dietary changes, access to land andgender-dynamics favouring the switch from indigenous to introduced water-demanding crops. My findings suggest that these temporal and cross-scaledynamics play a critical role to explain seed governance and the differentways farmers manage and access the seeds of indigenous versus introducedcrops, with consequences for farmers’ seed sovereignty. My results alsoshow differences across gender and wealth regarding who bears most of thecosts and who benefits the most from the shift from indigenous tointroduced crops, with women and poor households belonging to the mostdisadvantaged groups. Drawing on theories of political ecology, resilience, and indigenousknowledge, I argue that crop diversity is produced and situated withinhistorical contexts and dynamic relations of power and that resilienceneeds to be understood as relational, contextual, social and politicallyembedded process. In the light of climate change, supporting resilience inrural agrarian communities entails that farmers re-gain sovereignty, knowledge, and control over their own agroecologies, which can only bedone by addressing historical agrarian injustices.

11 Februray, 2025. However, as a qualitative and interpretive science, little effort has been made to systematically quantify the comprehensive social and cultural relations depicted within them. Traditionally, “rich” ethnography has been equated with “messy” data by statistically inclined scholars. Yet, with the rise of big data and artificial intelligence, social scientists are increasingly embracing the complexity of such “messy” data. Building upon the strong tradition in GRAFO of bridging quantitative and qualitative research, we propose utilizing ethnographic monographs as a unique form of “messy” dataset to conduct ex post facto social network analyses. They are rich in details, social and cultural complex, and comprehensive. We just need to “scrap” or “mine” the social network described in them.

We selected two monographs for this exploration: “The Children of Sanchez” (Oscar Lewis, 1963) and “The Children of Gregoria” (Regnar Kristensen and Claudia Adeath, 2020). Both meticulously detail the lives of extended families living half a century apart in the marginal zones of Mexico City, employing the same ethnographic narrative style. The former describes a social network of 227 individuals, while the latter portrays one of 170. Starting with a close reading of both monographs, we quantified the relationships between individuals, weighing their economic and violent interactions, and recorded also other aspects of their social relationships (kinship, affinity, friendship, gender, generational differences, etc.). Subsequently, we conducted social network analyses on the “scraped” data using Gephi and R. The results were remarkably clear. They significantly challenged previous interpretations and gave new insights into household economics, gender roles, and violence. We shall present some of our findings in the seminar and set the stage for discussing our experience with “datafication” of rich, complex, ethnographic monographs.

18 September, 2024. Combining Text Mining and Social Network Analysis in the Big Data Era. This seminar highlights the extraordinary opportunities offered by this approach, with particular reference to digital ethnography. The study of texts not only makes it possible to handle and interpret large volumes of unstructured data but also opens up new perspectives in understanding social phenomena. Through tools such as sentiment analysis and topic modeling, researchers can explore and decipher complex narratives and discourses from a wide range of digital sources, including social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, as well as qualitative data from questionnaires and interviews. This type of analysis allows for revealing prevailing sentiments, emerging trends, and underlying themes that would otherwise remain hidden from traditional methods. Moreover, the use of tools such as co-occurrence analysis in texts facilitates the discovery of relationships between words or concepts within a text corpus. Also, it offers deep insights into cultural and social dynamics.

10 June, 2024. Their open-ended and flexible character makes them especially useful in explorative research. However, fieldnotes are typically highly unstructured and personalised by individual researchers, which makes them harder to use as a method for data collection in collaborative and mixed-methods research. More precisely, the unstructured nature of ethnographic fieldnotes presents three distinct challenges: 1) Ethnographic fieldnotes are traditionally handwritten in notebooks during fieldwork, requiring hours of retyping and organisation at a later point 2) Fieldnotes often contain idiosyncratic writing difficult to comprehend by any other than the author 3) These factors make it more challenging to compile and compare fieldnotes from different ethnographers in collaborative projects. To solve these three challenges, we introduce “EthNote” free progressive web app available on desktop and mobile for systematically collecting, processing, and analysing fieldnotes. Via predefined fieldnote templates, EthNote allows individuals or teams to collect similarly structured fieldnotes, images, and audio, among other data sources securely in one place, using any mobile or desktop device.

13 May, 2024. La violencia en los márgenes y los límites de nuestro entendimiento, Javier Auyero (University of Texas). 16 h. Despite the use of highly advanced technologies, the warehouses surrounding most modern cities still employ a vast number of unskilled laborers to pick, pack, and deliver client orders. However, their bosses are now computers that communicate with them in their own language, instructing them on where to go, what to pick, and where to deliver, among other tasks. LEAN processes have eliminated many team managers, leaving these modern workers in a sort of no-man’s- land.

During their off-duty hours, these workers also engage with social media. I am interested in understanding how they form new social relations in a foreign setting. How do they socially integrate into the society that surrounds them? Comparing labor migrants in similar working conditions in Copenhagen and Barcelona, I also explore the influence of social and cultural structures on their desires, behaviors, and abilities to form new social relationships. As I am currently in my fieldwork, I will present and discuss my preliminary results.

January 29th, 2024. Using Social Network Analysis to understand the social organization of knowledge transmission: an Indian case study. (Matthieu Salpeteur, IRD). 16 h. However in this line of research the potential role of informal relationships has mostly been overlooked. In this paper, we study how two types of informal relationships, namely migration partnership and friendship, affect the distribution of LEK within a community of transhumant shepherds from the Kutch area (Gujarat, India). Using social network analysis, we map three networks (migration, male friendship, female friendship) and compare with similarity-based quantitative approaches the clusters extracted from these networks in relation to four domains of LEK: knowledge about soils, about ethnoveterinary practices, about sheep breeds, and in ethnobotany.

Our results show that 1) migration clusters are associated with significant variations in LEK across three domains of knowledge, while 2) friendship clusters are associated to minor variations. We relate these results to the importance of common practical experiences involved by joint migration. Moreover, kin relations are shown to strongly underlie friendship ties and the formation of migration groups, and as such appear as a potential driver of the dynamics of the local LEK system.

2023

November 29th, 2023. Multilevel networks and integrated health care in Australia. On the one hand it is seen as an exemplar of a modern ‘narco state’. On the other, it is feared that the Guinea-Bissauan state will be corrupted and ruined by the cocaine connections bringing the country closer toward an anarchic lack of formal governance. That cocaine connections induce failed states and that failed states contaminate seems, as such, to be the common argument concerning the international agencies working on the issue. However, if we look at the picture in social and historical terms, the international society seems to have misinterpreted the logic of the phenomena and inversed its causality. The Guinea-Bissauan state is not on the verge of collapse because of the influx of cocaine and the presence of the drug cartels. Rather than inducing a crisis within state, the cartels have targeted Bissau exactly because of the critical state of affairs. The attractiveness of Bissau as a drug hub is directly related to the decline, abandonment, and geo-political neglect start with. Building on longitudinal ethnographic studies with people involved in the trade, this paper traces the influx of cocaine into Bissau and looks at the social and societal logics that maintain and perpetuate its existence in the country.

May 11, 2023. Alba Valenciano (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid). 15:30h, Sala de Juntes, Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres. Hybrid format.

Second-hand clothing markets are booming, and they have become one of the many resources for greenwashing the fast-fashion industry and conspicuous consumption practices in most parts of the world. The paper explores the second-hand clothing value chain as a (re)commodification process that it does not only turn “rags to riches” for some but also generates embittered financial opportunities for others. By presenting an ethnography of the everyday use of imported second-hand clothing bulk bales by Guinean female petty traders, I show how second-hand clothing is used to retain and distribute value. The paper revolves around the role of the market (place) in shaping commodities and their uses. While the volatile market in which Guinean petty traders operate is filled with insecurity, the second-hand market-place generates the possibilities to navigate this uncertainty. The second-hand clothing bale becomes, at once, a commodity, a financial resource, and an ecological problem once it hits the market-place stalls in Malabo.

2022

-December 14, 2022. In particular, the extent that relationships on the platform are segregated based on attributes such as partisanship has important implications for how information flows on it. This talk presents an analysis of homophily in following relationships on Twitter for a sample of 1.1 million U.S. users matched to administrative data, including age, race/ethnicity, sex, location, and partisanship information. We look at how these variables are associated with having a tie on Twitter and find geographical distance to be the most important variable. In contrast, partisanship homophily is not as relevant as concerns over polarization generally imply.

Yo can access the full seiminar here.

Puede consultar el cartel completo aquí.

Past seminars

2026 The AFRONTA project (PID2022-139502OB-I00) focuses on the study of vulnerable childhoods in a context marked by the convergence of multiple crises (social, economic, health-related, information reliability, etc.).
