Maria Esther Esteban Torné was born on November 21, 1967. She has a degree in Biological Sciences (1990), with a Bachelor’s Degree (1991), and a PhD in Biological Sciences (1997) from the University of Barcelona. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in University Teaching (2004), ICE-UB. She has been Full Professor at the University since 2008, previously she was Lecturer and Associate Professor. At the University of Barcelona, she has held management positions as Secretary of the Department of Animal Biology and Coordinator of the Master in Biological Anthropology. She is currently Head of Studies of the Biomedical Sciences degree (Faculty of Biology, Diagonal campus).

Since 1993, she has participated as a researcher in several projects subsidized by the Sectoral Program for the General Promotion of Knowledge (DGYCIT), SGR Programs of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Integrated Actions Spain-Italy, Spain-France. She has participated in 5 AECID subsidized projects, and has been a coordinator in 2 of them. She has published more than 60 scientific articles in journals included in the Science Citation Index and in the Social Science Citation Index. Maria Esther has directed doctoral theses and collaborated with various national and international research groups in the field of anthropology (Choaïb Doukkali University, Morocco, University of Monastir, Tunisia, Yarmouk University, Jordan, Thessaloniki and Patras University, Greece; of Sarajevo, Bosnia Herzegovina, University of Cagliari, and “La Sapienza” of Rome, Italy, and University of Corte and Toulouse III, France) and epidemiology (Universidad Europea de Madrid, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona). She works on Genetics and Genomics of Human Populations, Human Ecology and Epidemiology.
