I have a degree in Biology from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Mexico), a PhD in Biology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain) and I did a postdoctoral stay at the Universidade dos Açores (Portugal) working on different molecular genetics projects. Later I was a research professor in the Advanced Genomics Unit of Cinvestav (Mexico), where I set up and coordinated the first Paleogenomics laboratory in the country and conducted research in different areas of genomics. I have supervised 8 doctoral theses, 19 master’s final theses and 8 bachelor’s final theses. With my collaborators I have published more than 50 articles in indexed international journals with an impact factor and 10 book chapters.
I am currently a lecturer at the Anthropology Unit of the UAB where I want to investigate the variation, both normal and pathological, of mitochondrial function in the human population.
Main areas of research
- Role of mitochondrial function in evolutionary processes – evolutionary consequences of mitochondrial introgression; mitochondrial DNA as selection pressure of the nuclear genome; mitochondrial imbalance.
- Paleogenomics – analysis of individuals from Xalla, archaeological site of Teotihuacan, Mexico (in collaboration with Linda R. Manzanilla); paleopathology
