{"id":198,"date":"2020-11-30T10:51:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-30T10:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webs.uab.cat\/gredics\/background-and-current-status\/"},"modified":"2020-11-30T10:51:32","modified_gmt":"2020-11-30T10:51:32","slug":"background-and-current-status","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/webs.uab.cat\/gredics\/background-and-current-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Background and current status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rtecenter\"><span style=\"color:#0000FF\"><strong>Background and current status<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">We understand that the overall purpose of the&nbsp;Competences for Democratic Culture (CDC)&nbsp;Framework is to foster&nbsp;a critical, active and democratic citizenship at times of \u201ceconomic and political crisis\u201d when it is \u201cmore evident that citizens should be able and willing to engage actively in&nbsp;defense&nbsp;of these values&nbsp;and principles\u201d (Council of Europe, 2018 p. 13).<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" height=\"695\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/Fi6SfiV.png\" width=\"1060\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">As such,&nbsp;we take as starting points:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>a. Competences for Democratic Culture (CDC) need to respond to&nbsp;multiple problems that coexist in this contemporary crisis (BBC, 2017; Eurobarometer, 2018; UN,&nbsp;n.d):<\/strong> rise of extreme-right nationalism, xenophobic and racist attitudes (Leivisk\u00e4, 2018);&nbsp;the presence of&nbsp;uncriticality, irresponsibility and \u2018hate\u2019&nbsp;in the digital space&nbsp;(Runciman, 2018); high levels of frustration, alienation, and cynicism toward conventional politics, particularly among marginalized young people (Sant &amp; Davies, 2018) and a crisis of democratic faith (Asmonti, 2013, p. 143).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><strong>b. Teachers are essential to promote a Democratic Culture and yet we know little about whether or not teacher education prepares future teachers to consider the democratic culture dimension in their practices&nbsp;and how this could be done<\/strong>&nbsp;(Schulz et al 2018).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">In light of these challenges,&nbsp;EDCD-TEP will examine and make practical recommendations on how a democratic culture dimension&nbsp;responding to this contemporary crisis&nbsp;could be embedded in primary teacher education&nbsp;programmes.
