Hafiz Muhammad Safwan is a veterinarian from Pakistan. He is dedicated to
advancing animal health through research, medicine, and surgery. Currently
pursuing a PhD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Spain. He is
part of a research group focused on developing a vaccine against canine
leishmaniasis. Their work aims to provide an effective and sustainable
solution to this serious disease, which affects dogs worldwide. Through
scientific innovation, collaboration, and a strong passion for veterinary
medicine, he strives to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of animals
and the future of veterinary healthcare.
- Van Denn Domingo Cruz, DVM, MSc
Filipino Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and MSc graduate in Zoonoses and One
Health, currently pursuing a PhD at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
(UAB) under the STOPLEISH project. His research focuses on developing and
evaluating innovative vaccine formulations for canine Leishmania infantum to
reduce zoonotic transmission and advance One Health goals. With one decade of experience in veterinary medicine, microbiology, and epidemiology, Dr. Cruz
has expertise in the diagnosis and management of bacterial, viral, and parasitic
diseases in small animals.
He served as the field team leader/epidemiologist in a Philippine NGO
(FETPAFI) and the University of Glasgow project employing the Integrated Bite
Case Management for dog-mediated rabies control and elimination. He is also
an advocate for public engagement in animal health and welfare and actively
promotes responsible pet ownership and disease prevention strategies.

She is a Brazilian veterinarian who graduated from the Federal University of
Viçosa (UFV) in 2020, Brazil, with an academic exchange at the Federal
University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil. Throughout her career, she has
focused on large animal clinical practice, specializing in equine medicine
and surgery at the Brazilian Institute of Veterinary Medicine (IBVET). She
was a member of the veterinary internal medicine research group at UFV,
dedicating her studies to gastroenterology, electrolyte and acid-base
imbalances, enteral hydration, and blood gas analysis. Currently, she is a
PhD student in Animal Medicine and Health at the Universitat Autònoma
de Barcelona (UAB), with a research project focused on Leishmaniasis in
Equids.

Anna Pelegrí Pineda is a biochemist and a graduate of the Master’s program in
Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biomedicine. In recent years, she has been
working as a laboratory technician supporting research in the Department of
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), in
collaboration with the Department of Animal and Food Science, where she has actively contributed to research within the BINOIN project (New non-invasive fecal biomarkers of intestinal inflammation in post-weaning piglets). She currently continues in her role as a research support technician within the MIAC group.
