New PhD thesis successfully defended in the field of clinical simulation and computing<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

We are pleased to announce the successful defense of the PhD thesis entitled:<\/p>\n\n
\u201cDesigning In Silico Clinical Trials: The COPD Case Study\u201d<\/strong>, carried out by Mohsen Hallaj Asghar<\/strong> on Tuesday, March 24.<\/p>\n\n The thesis was supervised by Dr. Emilio Luque<\/strong> and Dr. \u00c1lvaro Wong<\/strong>, and focuses on the design of in silico<\/em> clinical trials, using computational models to study Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).<\/p>\n\n On behalf of the research group, we warmly congratulate Mohsen Hallaj Asghar on this important academic achievement and wish him every success in his future research career.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\r\n PhD Thesis Defense: Diego Encinas on I\/O Modeling in Parallel Systems<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n On March 20, Diego Encinas successfully defended his doctoral thesis titled:<\/p>\n\n “Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation Applied to Input\/Output Architecture in Parallel Computers”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n The thesis was developed through a collaborative framework between the National University of La Plata (UNLP) and the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona (UAB), under the supervision of:<\/p>\n\n Dr. Marcelo Naiouf and Esp. Armando De Giusti (UNLP)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Dr. Emilio Luque and Dr. Dolores Rexachs (UAB)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n During the defense, the primary findings of the research were presented, highlighting the potential of agent-based simulation as a powerful tool for analyzing and optimizing I\/O systems within High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.<\/p>\n\n Our research group extends its warmest congratulations to Diego Encinas on this significant academic milestone and for his valuable contribution to the field of parallel and high-performance systems.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n <\/p>\r\n Dr. Marina Mor\u00e1n receives the Best Doctoral Thesis Award from the journal Conocimiento e Innovaci\u00f3n<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n The Postgraduate Program in Computer Science<\/strong>, through the scientific journal Conocimiento e Innovaci\u00f3n<\/strong>, has awarded the prize for the best Doctoral Thesis defended during the previous calendar year. This recognition particularly considers the impact of the scientific publications associated with the doctoral research.<\/p>\n\n In this edition, the jury decided to grant the award to the thesis entitled:<\/p>\n\n \u201cModeling and management of energy consumption in a fault-tolerant high-performance computing system<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n by Dr. Marina Mor\u00e1n.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n The thesis was supervised by Dr. Dolores Rexachs, Dr. Javier Balladini, and Dr. Enzo Rucci,<\/strong> and focuses on the study and development of models and strategies to optimize energy consumption in High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, incorporating fault-tolerance mechanisms. This type of research is particularly relevant in the current context, where energy efficiency and system reliability are key factors in the design and operation of modern supercomputing infrastructures.<\/p>\n\n We would like to congratulate Dr. Marina Mor\u00e1n and her supervisors on this important recognition, which highlights the scientific quality of the work and its impact in the field of high-performance computing.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\r\n HPC4EAS Participates in the XVI CAPAP-H Winter Seminar (Elche, 2026)<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n Researcher Eduardo Cabrera, member of the HPC4EAS group, participated in the XVI edition of the CAPAP-H Winter Seminar, held on February 11\u201313, 2026, at the Universidad Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez de Elche, at the Escuela Polit\u00e9cnica Superior de Elche.<\/p>\n\n The CAPAP-H Winter Seminar is an annual key meeting point for the scientific community in High-Performance Architecture and Programming, fostering the exchange of experiences, research results, and future strategic research directions.<\/p>\n\n During the session on Wednesday, February 11 (16:30-20:00), dedicated to research group presentations, Eduardo Cabrera introduced the HPC4EAS group, presenting its main research lines.<\/p>\n\n Participation in this seminar has strengthened the visibility of the group, fostered synergies with other national research teams, and opened opportunities for potential collaborations in the field of High-Performance Computing.<\/p>\n\n HPC4EAS would like to thank the local organizing committee for the excellent organization of the event and for providing this valuable forum for scientific exchange.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n <\/p>\r\n Extension of the FPU 2025 Call Deadline<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n The deadline for the 2025 University Teacher Training (FPU) grants call has been extended, within the framework of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation (PEICTI) 2024\u20132027.<\/p>\n\n The new deadline for submitting applications is 27 February 2026 at 14:00 (Spanish peninsular time).<\/p>\n\n Likewise, for candidates whose host institution is the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona, the internal deadline for submitting the Declaration of compliance with the requirements of the PhD thesis supervisor has been extended until 19 February 2026.<\/p>\n\n This document must be duly completed and signed, and sent to the following email address: recerca.respon@uab.cat<\/p>\n\n More information about the FPU 2025 call:<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\r\n Open-access research data publication (CORA)<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n The HPC4EAS<\/strong> research group, part of the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems (CAOS) at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona<\/strong>, has published a new open research dataset in the institutional CORA<\/strong> repository (Dataverse).<\/p>\n\n The dataset corresponds to the work of Maria Harita and is associated with a scientific article that is currently in the dissemination process. This publication is aligned with UAB\u2019s policy promoting open science, research reproducibility, and the reuse of research data.<\/p>\n\n Access to the dataset:<\/strong> <\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n <\/p>\r\n Academic Stay in Mexico \u2013 July 2025<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n As part of our commitment to strengthening international academic collaboration, our colleague Alvaro Wong is currently carrying out a research stay at the Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) in Hermosillo, Mexico.<\/p>\n\n This initiative is part of a joint effort between the HPC4EAS (High Performance Computing for Efficient Applications and Simulation) Research Group, based in the Department of Computer Architecture and Operating Systems (CAOS) at the Universitat Aut\u00f2noma de Barcelona, and the research group at UNISON.<\/p>\n\n The purpose of this collaboration is to build long-term scientific ties and to develop a doctoral research proposal, focusing on the modeling and simulation of complex systems in the context of healthcare and high-performance computing.<\/p>\n\n <\/p>\r\n ICCS 2025<\/p>\n<\/strong><\/p>\r\n \n As part of the International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS 2025)<\/strong> held in Singapore, our colleagues Francisco Mesas and Ramona Galeano<\/strong> presented their research work.
