Generalment, se situen a uns 3.000 o 6.000 m de profunditat, per\u00f2 aix\u00f2 pot canviar depenent del mar en les que es troben. Aix\u00ed i tot, s\u00f3n zones importants perqu\u00e8 cobreixen aproximadament el 50% de la superf\u00edcie terrestre sota els oceans, ja que es troben en tots ells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Es formen a partir de l&#8217;acumulaci\u00f3 de sediments fins, com argiles i llims, que cobreixen l&#8217;escor\u00e7a oce\u00e0nica originalment rugosa, donant aquest aspecte pla. Aquests sediments provenen de corrents que descendeixen pel tal\u00fas continental fins a les zones m\u00e9s profundes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les condicions en aquestes zones s\u00f3n extremes, com de pressi\u00f3, llum, d\u2019oxigen, temperatura\u2026, per\u00f2 hi seguim trobant organismes que presenten adaptacions molt interessants per estudiar i aprofitar.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A m\u00e9s, aquestes regions juguen un paper vital en els cicles biogeoqu\u00edmics globals, incloent-hi el cicle del carboni, ja que actuen com a dip\u00f2sits de carboni org\u00e0nic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Les planes abissals del Mar Catalanobalear es troben a profunditats menors en comparaci\u00f3 amb les dels oceans oberts, per la naturalesa semitancada del Mediterrani. Tamb\u00e9 cal remarcar que no s\u00f3n veritables planes, a causa de la seva accidentada morfologia, per\u00f2 es consideren com a tal.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un fet caracter\u00edstic \u00e9s que tota la plana abissal de la mar Balear est\u00e0 coberta per una espessa capa de sal gemma de centenars de metres de gruix, que passa a ser guix per la fossa de Val\u00e8ncia. Aquesta capa de sal est\u00e0 protegida per sediments de fangs marins, pliocens i quaternaris.
