A new generation of airspace users\u2014drones and urban air mobility vehicles\u2014is rapidly emerging, with forecasts predicting&nbsp;<strong>very high traffic densities over major European cities<\/strong>&nbsp;in the coming decades. To safely manage this growth, Europe has been developing&nbsp;<strong>U\u2011space<\/strong>, a dedicated traffic management framework for unmanned aviation, including new services, regulations, and operational roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this progress, important challenges remain. One of the most critical gaps is the lack of&nbsp;<strong>predictable and standardised procedures to handle abnormal or failure situations<\/strong>, which are essential for safe large\u2011scale urban operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>U\u2011LAND<\/strong>\u00a0addresses this challenge by expanding and improving U\u2011space services to make\u00a0<strong>urban air mobility safer and more reliable<\/strong>. Bringing together leading research groups from UPC and UAB, the project focuses on enhancing mission planning, contingency management, and airspace design. Through advanced modelling, simulation, and real flight trials, U\u2011DRONE develops new U\u2011space services and tools that support safe operations even under off\u2011nominal conditions, contributing to the future of sustainable urban aviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/webs.uab.cat\/u-land\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project website<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Improving the planning and management of flight contingencies in the scalable deployment of drone operations We are entering a new era of aviation that will transform how people and goods move through our cities.
