In 1994, the first University Archives Conference was held in Valladolid, organized by the Conference of Archives of Spanish Universities (CAU). This event was created with the aim of promoting collaboration between university archives. With a technical focus, the conference has become an essential tool for the development and consolidation of archives in Spanish universities. Additionally, it has turned into an important meeting point for professionals in the field of archives and document management, allowing for the sharing of experiences, concerns, and projects.
In 2025, the XXX University Archives Conference (CAU CRUE) will take place on October 27th and 28th in the city of Barcelona, coinciding with the ICA/SUV 2025 Annual International Conference, although it will be held a few days earlier. This will be a perfect professional opportunity to attend both events, two key dates for our profession.
The conference is organized jointly by the Conference of Archives of Spanish Universities (CAU CRUE), the Section of University Archives of the International Council on Archives (ICA/SUV), and the Autonomous University of Barcelona. It will be hosted at the Casa de Convalescencia of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau.
Under the title “University Archives and Innovative Research: Challenges for Sustainability”, the event will address the challenges and perspectives that university archives face in relation to issues such as climate change and sustainability. These challenges may lead to significant changes both in the infrastructure of our institutions and in archival practices. For example, archives face difficulties during climate events such as heatwaves or floods. These are current issues that could require a fundamental reconsideration of aspects like preservation and conservation of materials, or even the location and conditions of archive storage, in order to tackle these challenges.
Topics related to the increasing energy consumption, particularly within electronic administration, will also be discussed, emphasizing the importance of document evaluation to advance towards sustainability in administrations.
