LAPREC contributed to the LASA 2026 International Congress, held in Paris at the end of May, with a critical debate that examined the effects of polarization, media narratives on migration and otherness, and forms of digital activism that respond to contemporary inequalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel \u201cPublic Discourse, Communication and Social Media: Dialogues on Discrimination and Difference,\u201d moderated by Teresa Vel\u00e1zquez Garc\u00eda-Talavera, brought together contributions focused on contemporary dynamics of polarization, otherness, and inequality. Both Vel\u00e1zquez\u2019s presentation, \u201cFallacies and Disqualification: The Disappearance of the Argument,\u201d and Luc\u00eda Nieto\u2019s presentation, \u201cFrom the Headline to the Comment: The Public Construction of Difference on Social Media,\u201d incorporated data from the research project \u201cDigital Media and Social Networks: Discourses on Moroccan Female Migration in the Mediterranean: The Construction of Imaginaries, Uses, and Reception,\u201d led by N\u00faria Simelio Sol\u00e0 and Ricardo Carniel Bugs, of which both speakers are members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, Ver\u00f3nica Luna B\u00e1ez, a member of LAPREC, presented \u201cThe Representation of \u2018the Other\u2019 as an Enemy: Media Narratives, Social Mobilization, and the Indigenous Movement in Ecuador,\u201d contributing to the discussion from a Latin American perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The panel also featured F\u00e9lix J. R\u00edos, Professor at the University of La Laguna and Coordinator of the Applied Semiotic Studies Research Group (GIESA), who presented \u201cLiterary Creation and Networked Writing: Diverging Paths.
