Meetings

Researchers from the Logisitcs and Aeronautics Unit participates in the World Urban Forum of the UN-Habitat.

Researchers from the Aeronautics and Logistics Unit of the Department of Telecommunications and Engineering Systems will offer on 8 April a session on the simulation and citizen participation in the forum organised by the UN-Habitat programme, which this year will be held in Medellín, Colombia.

From 5 to 11 April, Medellín will host the World Urban Forum 7 (WUF7), a non-legislative forum organised by UN-Habitat. The forum is offered in a different city every two years to examine the most urgent issues currently existing in human settlement areas. Among the issues are rapid urbanisations and their impact on cities, communities, economies, climate change and policies. It is the first world conference on cities.

Researchers from the Aeronautics and Logistics Unit of the Department of Telecommunications and Engineering Systems will offer on 8 April a session entitled “Models causals de simulació per al foment de l’e-participació en el disseny de polítiques urbanes”. The network event will deal with digital simulation techniques that help citizens become involved in the decision-making process of their cities when designing urban policies. Some of these techniques have been improved during the development of the European e-participation project FUPOL (www.fupol.eu), in which the UAB also participated.

The researchers will present the ways in which simulation tools can be used to create serious games in which the opinions of citizens are valued and taken into consideration by urban planners. Following the presentation there will be an open debate on the particular cases proposed by the attendants, with the aim of demonstrating how an e-participation simulator can help when making decisions on how to carry out urban projects.

The forum will bring together a large range of experts in various areas of life. The participants include members of national, regional and local governments, non-governmental organisations, commitarian organisations, research and academic institutes, professionals from the private sector, financial development institutions, foundations, media, United Nations’ organisations and other international organisations.

The WUF fosters participation amongst its members of the Habitat Programme and other relevant international programmes and organisations. This guarantees its involvement in the identification of new issues as well as the exchange of lessons learned, of good practices and of good policies.
