For example, the English name of a university office called the <em>Oficina de Programes Internacionals (OPI)<\/em> would be the <em>Office for International Programmes (OPI)<\/em>. And the English names of the <em>Diari Oficial de la Generalitat de Catalunya<\/em>, the <em>Diari Oficial de la Comunitat Valenciana<\/em> and the <em>Bolet\u00edn Oficial del Estado<\/em> would be the <em>Official Gazette of the Government of Catalonia (DOGC)<\/em>, the <em>Official Gazette of the Government of Valencia (DOCV)<\/em> and the <em>Official Gazette of the Government of Spain (BOE)<\/em>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Second, a number of very frequent abbreviations in Catalan-speaking universities come from common noun phrases that have no official English equivalent (<em>PAS<\/em> from <em>personal d\u2019administraci\u00f3 i serveis<\/em>, <em>PDI<\/em> from<em>personal docent i investigador<\/em>, <em>SED<\/em> from <em>secretaria d\u2019estudiants i doc\u00e8ncia<\/em> and <em>PAT<\/em> from <em>pla d\u2019acci\u00f3 tutorial<\/em>). This guide recommends explaining or paraphrasing the full term the first time it occurs in a text and then using only the Catalan abbreviation for the rest of the text.
