These include <em>mankind <\/em>(<em>humanity<\/em>), <em>manpower<\/em> (<em>staff<\/em>),\u00a0<em>prehistoric man <\/em>and <em>caveman<\/em> (<em>prehistoric humans, early societies<\/em>), <em>Englishmen<\/em>, etc. (<em>the English<\/em>) and <em>Englishman<\/em>, etc. (<em>an English person<\/em>). The word <em>bachelor<\/em> may also refer to a single man, and <em>master <\/em>can refer to a young man or a male teacher (feminine <em>mistress<\/em>). The Latin <em>alumnus <\/em>is properly masculine-only (fem. singular, <em>alumna<\/em>; masc. plural, <em>alumni<\/em>; fem. plural, <em>alumnae<\/em>). Meanwhile, <em>fellow\u00a0<\/em>is sometimes considered to refer primarily to men. In present-day use, none of these words retain any real masculine connotations, and <em>bachelor of science<\/em>, <em>master of arts<\/em>, <em>alumni<\/em> and <em>fellow<\/em> are all perfectly applicable to both men and women.
