These include <em>economics<\/em>,<em>electronics<\/em>, <em>physics<\/em>, <em>statistics <\/em>and <em>telecommunications<\/em>, which are usually singular in Catalan (<em>economia<\/em>, <em>electr\u00f2nica<\/em>, <em>f\u00edsica<\/em>, <em>estad\u00edstica<\/em> and <em>telecomunicaci\u00f3<\/em>, respectively). However, when treated as the name of a field of knowledge or as a subject of study, they are considered collective nouns and take a singular verb.<\/p>\n<div class=\"tipsCentrat\">\n<table class=\"tipsExemple tipsCorrecte\" summary=\"Taula amb exemples\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tipsEsquerra mida26px\" valign=\"top\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uab.cat\/manualdestilinteruniversitari\/files\/2015\/04\/Small_OK.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-80\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uab.cat\/manualdestilinteruniversitari\/files\/2015\/04\/Small_OK.jpg\" alt=\"Small_OK\" width=\"19\" height=\"19\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td class=\"tipsEsquerra\" valign=\"middle\"><span class=\"exemple\">Economics is<\/span> commonly regarded as a soft science.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<p>A common but informal version of the term <em>mathematics<\/em> is <em>maths<\/em> (British English) or <em>math<\/em> (American English).
