From\u00a03\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a07 November 2014<\/strong>\u00a0took place in Milan (Italy) the\u00a0METROPOLIS International Congress,\u00a0<\/strong>“Migration. Energy for the Planet, Feeding Cultures”<\/strong><\/em>. This world congress is organised annually since 1996, almost every year in a different place. On this occasion, more than 700 participants from the five continents and a variety of academic, governmental, social, economic and cultural intitutions gathered in Milan (see:\u00a0http:\/\/www.metropolis2014.eu<\/a>). Within the framework of this congress, on\u00a05 November 2014<\/strong>, Workshop 205 titled “Immigration in Small Towns and Low-Density Rural Areas<\/strong><\/em>” took place. This workshop was co-organised by\u00a0F\u00e1tima Velez de Castro<\/strong>, Universidade de Coimbra, and\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>, UAB. Apart from the co-organisers, this session also included presentations from\u00a0Lucinda Fonseca<\/strong>, Universidade de Lisboa,\u00a0Michele Nori<\/strong>, European University Institute, and\u00a0Paulo Esp\u00ednola<\/strong>, Universidade de Coimbra. This workshop continued a previous session held in September 2011 within the framework of the METROPOLIS International Conference that took place in the Azores Islands, Portugal, and that was co-organised by Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret and Lucinda Fonseca (see previous news below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\u00a025 September 2014<\/strong>, in the framework of a 3 months research visit to MIGRINTER<\/strong>\u00a0laboratory,\u00a0Universit\u00e9 de Poitiers<\/strong>\u00a0(France), co-funded by Poitou-Charentes Region,\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0presented a seminar titled\u00a0“British immigration and sustainable small towns and rural areas. Exploring the case of Poitou-Charentes<\/em>” at Poitiers University’s MSHS. See news on the seminar: http:\/\/migrinter.hypotheses.org\/1877. And on the research visit in western France: http:\/\/migrinter.hypotheses.org\/1821 . This research visit to MIGRINTER and the fieldwork carried out in Poitou-Charentes from July to September 2014 it is based on the previous R+D project titled “Immigrants’ integration and the role of a diversity of organisations in achieving sustainable small towns and rural areas<\/strong><\/em>” (ref. CSO2009-13909) and funded by the Spanish Government Ministry for Science and Innovation (2010-2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 8 April 2014<\/strong>, the Viva of the PhD Thesis written by\u00a0Albert Mas\u00a0<\/strong>(GRM, UAB) and titled\u00a0Foreign immigration around natural areas. An international comparison between localities of Alt Empord\u00e0 (Spain) and Alentejo Litoral (Portugal)\u00a0<\/em>took successfully place at UAB. This thesis was directed by Dr.\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret\u00a0<\/strong>(GRM, UAB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\u00a022 March 2014<\/strong>, a paper co-written by\u00a0Dawid Wladyka\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0(GRM-UAB) and titled \u201cTowards a Mediterranean \u2018Superdiverse\u2019 Small Town? Immigration and Sustainability in Empuriabrava Neighborhood, Catalonia, Spain\u201d was presented at the\u00a02014 Urban Affairs Association Congress<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0held in San Antonio (Texas, USA).\u00a0SA1.01 session.\u00a0<\/em>Race, Ethnicity, and Urban Development (see:\u00a0http:\/\/urbanaffairsassociation.org\/conference\/conference2014\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\u00a010 March 2014<\/strong>,\u00a0Sandra Fatoric\u00a0<\/strong>(GRM-UAB) presented a paper titled \u201cClimate change vulnerability in coastal proteceted \u00e1reas of Catalonia (Spain): The cases of Ebro Delta and Aiguamolls de l\u2019Empord\u00e0\u201d in the\u00a0Conference on European Climate Change Adaptation. Research and Practice<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>held in Lisbon (Portugal). This presentation took place in the framework of a session on “Coastal areas, marine biodiversity and fisheries. Parallel session A” (vegeu:\u00a0http:\/\/www.adaptationfrontiers.eu<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 20 February 2014 the Viva of the PhD Thesis written by\u00a0Sandra Fatoric\u00a0<\/strong>(GRM, UAB) and entitled\u00a0Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Mediterranean region. Climate out of balance in Aiguamolls de l\u2019Empord\u00e0?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>took successfully place at UAB. The thesis was submitted on 20 December 2013 and was directed by Dr. Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret (GRM, UAB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 27 January 2014\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0participated in a workshop on\u00a0migration within the European Union<\/strong>\u00a0(EU) that took place in Brussels (Belgium).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

On 9 and 10 December 2013 the\u00a0final meeting<\/strong>\u00a0of the\u00a0R+D project \u201cImmigrants’ integration and the role of a diversity of organisations in achieving sustainable small towns and rural areas\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0took place at the UAB Geography Department with the participation of some research team members. The project has been financed from 2010 to 2013 by the Spanish Government\u2019s Ministry of Science and Innovation (reference CSO2009-13909) and directed by Dr Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret. On 28 November 2013 took place the Viva of the PhD Thesis written by\u00a0Dawid Wladyka<\/strong>\u00a0(GRM, UAB) and entitled:\u00a0Inter-Ethnic Experiences of Polish Immigrants in South-Western European Neighborhoods. Comparing Sagrada Familia, Barcelona, and Empuriabrava, Castell\u00f3 d\u2019Emp\u00faries<\/em><\/strong>. It was co-directed by Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret and Angels Pascual de Sans (GRM, UAB) and it was rated with an excellent\u00a0cum laude<\/em>\u00a0by the members of the tribunal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 26 November 2013, during the afternoon,\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper titled “Foreign immigration, intercultural dialogue and sustainability in small towns: The case of Roses, Northeastern Catalonia, Spain” in the\u00a0Migration, Media and Intercultural Dialogue Conference<\/strong><\/em>. This conference was held in Barcelona and organised by the United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

In August 2013,\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret\u00a0<\/strong>started a three-month research visit to the\u00a0United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM)<\/strong>. Most of the geographic research that he is doing there is associated to the R+D project titled \u201cThe integration of immigrants and the role of a diversity of organisations in achieving sustainable small towns and rural areas\u201d (reference CSO2009-13909) and is focused on an examination of different aspects of the cultural side of sustainability in small towns with a significant presence of foreign immigration. On this occasion, he is specifically focusing on the small Mediterranean town of Roses, which has a documented history of migration dating all the way back to Ancient Greece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During April, May and June 2013 the\u00a011th GRM Anual Seminar Series on Migration\u00a0<\/strong>took place at UAB. This academic year the seminar series has been specially devoted to\u00a0\u201cMigration, sustainability, mobility and environmental changes”<\/strong><\/em>. On 24 April 2013 an introductory session was presented by Anna Vilaseca and Eduard Trepat, Fundaci\u00f3 del M\u00f3n Rural, FMR (Lleida) and titled\u00a0“Mobilitat i sostenibilitat en el m\u00f3n rural catal\u00e0. De la transhum\u00e0ncia a les migracions”.\u00a0<\/em>Furthermore, in the international programme there were the following participants: Sandra Fatoric, GRM-UAB (17 May) with the paper titled\u00a0\u201cMigration as climate change adaptation? The case of Aiguamolls de l\u2019Empord\u00e0 (Catalonia, Spain<\/em>)\u00a0in an international context\u201d<\/em>; Dr. Helen Adams, University of Exeter, England (22 May) with the paper titled\u00a0“Mobility and immobility under environmental change: evidence from Peru and Bangladesh”<\/em>\u00a0; Ethemcan Turhan, ICTA (29 May) with the paper titled\u00a0\u201cClimate Change Adaptation, Migration and Human Security: A critical vision on circular\/seasonal migration from Turkey\u201d<\/em>; Dr. Navinder Singh, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umea, Suecia (5 June) with the paper titled\u00a0“Contrasting human and animal migrations in Central Asia and Europe”\u00a0<\/em>; and, finally, Dr. Kees van der Geest, Institute for Environment and Human Security, United Nations University (14 June) with the paper titled\u00a0“Rainfall variability, food insecurity and migration. Empirical evidence from the Where the Rain falls project\u201d.\u00a0<\/em>This seminar series was co-funded by the SGR 2009-2013 programme of AGAUR, it is linked to the R+D project CSO2009-13909 (funded by MICINN, 2010-2013) and it was directed by Dr. Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret (see more information and some pictures in the section “Seminars” of this website).<\/p>\n\n\n

In January 2013, the digital version of a methodological article co-written by Ricard Mor\u00e9n (and related with R+D project reference CSO2009-13909) was published in one of the most important geography journals in the world:\u00a0Progress in Human Geography<\/em><\/strong>. It is an article on migration and the sense of place that includes, among other contributions, methodological considerations and references to the study of immigration in rural areas and small towns. The full details are as follows: Mendoza, C.; Mor\u00e9n-Alegret, R. (2013) \u201cExploring methods and techniques for the analysis of senses of place and migration\u201d,\u00a0Progress in Human<\/em><\/strong>Geography<\/em>, first published on January 18, 2013 as doi:10.1177\/0309132512473867. This journal has an impact index of 4.489 and is second in the world ranking for Geography (2\/72), according to the JCR for 2012 published by Thomson Reuters in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along 2012 the bulk of the fieldwork of the R+D project titled\u00a0“Immigrants\u2019 integration and the role of a diversity of organizations in achieving sustainable small towns and rural areas”<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(2010-2013)<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0was completed. This project is funded by the Spanish\u00a0Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovaci\u00f3n<\/em>\u00a0and it is coordinated by\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n<\/strong>. After focusing fieldwork on Alt Empord\u00e0 county (Catalonia, Spain), fieldworks were carried out in Warwickshire (England), North-Western Peloponese (Greece), Alentejo Litoral (Portugal) and the South-East of South Australia (Australia). During 2013 more results from this project will be displayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On 25 October 2012\u00a0Josepha Milazzo<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper titled “Inmigraci\u00f3n internacional y desarrollo de territorios (semi) rurales mediterr\u00e1neos. Comparaci\u00f3n de los bolivianos en Catalu\u00f1a (Alt Empord\u00e0) y de los marroqu\u00edes en C\u00f3rcega (Plaine Orientale)” in the international congress\u00a0El valor de lo rural<\/em>. This academic gathering was held in Zamora (Mexico).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 3 2012,\u00a0Albert Mas<\/strong>\u00a0presented in the\u00a0XIII World Congress of Rural Sociology<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0held in Lisbon the paper \u201cInternational immigration around natural protected areas. Exploring some localities in\u00a0Alt Empord\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0(Spain) and\u00a0Alentejo Litoral\u00a0<\/em>(Portugal)\u201d, co-written with\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 27 2012,\u00a0Albert Mas<\/strong>\u00a0presented in the\u00a0IX Coloquio Ib\u00e9rico de Estudios Rurales<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0held in Lisbon the paper \u201cInmigraci\u00f3n internacional entorno a \u00e1reas naturales protegidas. Explorando algunas localidades del\u00a0Alt Empord\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0(Espa\u00f1a) y el\u00a0Alentejo Litoral\u00a0<\/em>(Portugal)\u201d, co-written with\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The article “Vulnerability to the effects of climate change and adaptation: The case of the Spanish Ebro Delta<\/a>“, co-authored by\u00a0Sandra Fatoric<\/strong>, has been published in 2012 and it has become one of most downloaded articles of the journal\u00a0Ocean & Coastal Management<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(Impact Factor: 1.524. 5-Year Impact Factor: 1.661). Several GRM members participated in the\u00a02012 American Association of Geographers Congress<\/strong>\u00a0that took place in\u00a0New York<\/strong>\u00a0city. On February 25\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper co-authored by himself,\u00a0Dawid Wladyka<\/strong> and\u00a0Albert Mas<\/strong>\u00a0on Foreign immigrants’ integration in Barcelona, Roses and Castell\u00f3 d’Emp\u00faries. Additionally, on Februery 26\u00a0Dawid Wladyka<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper co-authored by himself and\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0on Polish immigrants in Catalonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the\u00a0\u201cSocial Mobility<\/strong>\u00a0and<\/strong>\u00a0Migration.<\/strong>\u00a0Multidisciplinary Perspectives\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>congress on June 21, 2011,\u00a0Ricard<\/strong>\u00a0Mor\u00e9n<\/strong>\u00a0presented a report on the relation between the integration of immigrants in small towns and ruralphilia\/ruralphobia. The congress was organised by EURAC and was held in the alpine city of Bolzano\/Bozen (Italy). From the 12th to the 16th of September 2011 the\u00a016th International Metropolis Conference<\/strong>\u00a0took place in Ponta Delgada (Azores Islands, Portugal). The following GRM members participated in the\u00a0workshop<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cImmigrants\u2019 integration and sustainability in small towns\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>(wokshop 311):\u00a0Albert Mas, Dawid Wladyka, Sandra Fatoric<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret (co-organizer and chair of the workshop)<\/strong>. During the workshop, some of the work in progress carried out within the framework of the research project\u00a0\u201cImmigrants\u2019 integration and the role of a diversity of organisations in achieving sustainable small towns and rural areas\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0(2010-2012) was presented and discussed.
