Immigration and Sustainability in Empuriabrava Neighborhood, Catalonia, Spain\u201d was presented at the\u00a0<strong><em>2014 Urban Affairs Association Congress<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0held in San Antonio (Texas, USA).\u00a0<em>SA1.01 session.\u00a0<\/em>Race, Ethnicity, and Urban Development (see:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/urbanaffairsassociation.org\/conference\/conference2014\/\">http:\/\/urbanaffairsassociation.org\/conference\/conference2014\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>On\u00a0<strong>10 March 2014<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sandra Fatoric\u00a0<\/strong>(GRM-UAB) presented a paper titled \u201cClimate change vulnerability in coastal proteceted \u00e1reas of Catalonia (Spain): The cases of Ebro Delta and Aiguamolls de l\u2019Empord\u00e0\u201d in the\u00a0<strong><em>Conference on European Climate Change Adaptation. Research and Practice<\/em><\/strong><em>,\u00a0<\/em>held in Lisbon (Portugal). This presentation took place in the framework of a session on &#8220;Coastal areas, marine biodiversity and fisheries. Parallel session A&#8221; (vegeu: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adaptationfrontiers.eu\/\">http:\/\/www.adaptationfrontiers.eu<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>On 27 January 2014\u00a0<strong>Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0participated in a workshop on\u00a0<strong>migration within the European Union<\/strong>\u00a0(EU) that took place in Brussels (Belgium).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>On 26 November 2013,\u00a0<strong>Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret<\/strong>\u00a0presented a paper titled &#8220;Foreign immigration, intercultural dialogue and sustainability in small towns: The case of Roses, Northeastern Catalonia, Spain&#8221; in the\u00a0<em><strong>Migration, Media and Intercultural Dialogue Conference<\/strong><\/em>. This conference was held in Barcelona and organised by the United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>During April, May and June 2013 the\u00a0<strong>11th GRM Anual Seminar Series on Migration\u00a0<\/strong>took place at UAB. This academic year the seminar series has been specially devoted to<em><strong>\u00a0\u201cMigration, sustainability, mobility and environmental changes&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>. On 24 April 2013 an introductory session was presented by Anna Vilaseca and Eduard Trepat, Fundaci\u00f3 del M\u00f3n Rural, FMR (Lleida) and titled\u00a0<em>&#8220;Mobilitat i sostenibilitat en el m\u00f3n rural catal\u00e0. De la transhum\u00e0ncia a les migracions&#8221;.\u00a0<\/em>Furthermore, in the international programme there were the following participants: Sandra Fatoric, GRM-UAB (17 May) with the paper titled\u00a0<em>\u201cMigration as climate change adaptation? The case of Aiguamolls de l\u2019Empord\u00e0 (Catalonia, Spain<\/em>)\u00a0<em>in an international context\u201d<\/em>; Dr. Helen Adams, University of Exeter, England (22 May) with the paper titled\u00a0<em>&#8220;Mobility and immobility under environmental change: evidence from Peru and Bangladesh&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0; Ethemcan Turhan, ICTA (29 May) with the paper titled\u00a0<em>\u201cClimate Change Adaptation, Migration and Human Security: A critical vision on circular\/seasonal migration from Turkey\u201d<\/em>; Dr. Navinder Singh, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Umea, Suecia (5 June) with the paper titled<em>\u00a0&#8220;Contrasting human and animal migrations in Central Asia and Europe&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>; and, finally, Dr. Kees van der Geest, Institute for Environment and Human Security, United Nations University (14 June) with the paper titled\u00a0<em>&#8220;Rainfall variability, food insecurity and migration. Comparaci\u00f3n de los bolivianos en Catalu\u00f1a (Alt Empord\u00e0) y de los marroqu\u00edes en C\u00f3rcega (Plaine Orientale)&#8221; in the international congress\u00a0<em>El valor de lo rural<\/em>. This academic gathering was held in Zamora (Mexico).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 3 2012, Albert Mas presented in the\u00a0<strong><em>XIII World Congress of Rural Sociology<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0held in Lisbon the paper \u201cInternational immigration around natural protected areas. Exploring some localities in\u00a0<em>Alt Empord\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0(Spain) and\u00a0<em>Alentejo Litoral\u00a0<\/em>(Portugal)\u201d, co-written with Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>On July 27 2012, Albert Mas presented in the<em>\u00a0<strong>IX Coloquio Ib\u00e9rico de Estudios Rurales<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0held in Lisbon the paper \u201cInmigraci\u00f3n internacional entorno a \u00e1reas naturales protegidas. Explorando algunas localidades del\u00a0<em>Alt Empord\u00e0<\/em>\u00a0(Espa\u00f1a) y el\u00a0<em>Alentejo Litoral\u00a0<\/em>(Portugal)\u201d, co-written with Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Several GRM members participated in the\u00a0<strong>2012 American Association of Geographers Congress<\/strong>\u00a0that took place in New York city. On February 25 Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret presented a paper co-authored by himself, Dawid Wladyka and Albert Mas on Foreign immigrants&#8217; integration in Barcelona, Roses and Castell\u00f3 d&#8217;Emp\u00faries. Additionally, on Februery 26 Dawid Wladyka presented a paper co-authored by himself and Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret on Polish immigrants in Catalonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-dots\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>From the 12th to the 16th of September 2011 the\u00a0<strong>16th International Metropolis Conference<\/strong>\u00a0took place in Ponta Delgada (Azores Islands, Portugal). The following GRM members participated in the workshop \u201cImmigrants\u2019 integration and sustainability in small towns\u201d (wokshop 311): Albert Mas, Dawid Wladyka, Sandra Fatoric and Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret (co-organizer and chair of the workshop). During the workshop, some of the work in progress carried out within the framework of the research project \u201cImmigrants\u2019 integration and the role of a diversity of organisations in achieving sustainable small towns and rural areas\u201d (2010-2012) was presented and discussed. This project is directed by Dr. Ricard Mor\u00e9n-Alegret and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (R+D project CSO2009-13909). The congress was organised by EURAC and was held in the alpine city of Bolzano\/Bozen (Italy). One of the outcomes of this congress was the publication of the following article and monograph in conjunction with other experienced researchers that have studied immigration in small European towns: Medda-Windischer, R.; Danson, M.; Mor\u00e9n-Alegret, R.; Gaye, M.
