\/><\/p>\n<p>This past Saturday we had the opportunity to share our research with a select group of members and friends of the NW <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwmito-research.org\/guild.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mitochondrial Research Guild<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The event, aptly named Mito Science Night, included a tour around the different labs in the Mitochondrial Program: the <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/anesth\/research\/labs\/sedensky\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morgan\/Sedensky lab<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattlechildrens.org\/research\/developmental-therapeutics\/labs-programs\/hahn-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hahn lab<\/a> and the Quintana lab.<\/p>\n<p>Guests were welcomed into the Seattle Children&#8217;s Research Institute at around 5:30pm, where they could start enjoying some <em>hors d&#8217;oeuvres <\/em>and drinks to get the night started&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Once our mitos were charged, it was time to visit the labs!<\/p>\n<p>Several stations were ready for this 50-minute (-ish) tour:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nicole Brockway<\/strong>, of the Morgan\/Sedensly lab, showed\u00a0the importance of green fluorescent <em>Caenorhabditis elegans<\/em> (a.k.a.\n<figure id=\"attachment_478\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-478\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.quintanalab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/IMG_0503.jpg\"><img research.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Valeria Vasta<\/strong> and <strong>Sihoun Hahn<\/strong> showed current methods to sequence nuclear and mitochondrial DNA in the search for novel mutations and diagnostics in mitochondrial disease.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Bernhard Kaiser<\/strong>, of the Morgan\/Sedensky lab presented the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seahorsebio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seahorse<\/a> analyzer, which enables scientists (a.k.a. <em>us<\/em>) to study respiration of really small quantities of fresh mitochondria from healthy and sick tissue and\u00a0identify how mitochondrial mutations affect the physiology of mitochondria.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elisenda Sanz<\/strong>, from the Quintana lab, showed novel tools to identify mitochondria for select populations, and the future potential of these approaches.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Christian Woods<\/strong> and <strong>Pavel Zimin<\/strong>, of the Morgan\/Sedensky lab showed how we are identifying the electrophysiological alterations in neurons carrying mitochondrial mutations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Albert Quintana <\/strong>showed the use of optogenetics and viral vector delivery in our\u00a0quest\u00a0to uncover what causes neurons to be sensitive (or resistant) to mitochondrial disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the tour, guests (and scientists) had the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful dinner while we continued discussing about science, life or any other topic that came to mind.<\/p>\n<p>It just amazes me\u00a0the amount of insightful and interesting questions that a night like this can generate!<\/p>\n<p>All in all, an extraordinary experience that allowed us to provide a first-hand impression of our work and show our appreciation to the NW Mitochondrial Research Guild for their continuous support of our research.<\/p>\n<p>Kudos to <strong>Marge Sedensky<\/strong>, <strong>Phil Morgan<\/strong> and <strong>Diana Wells<\/strong> for putting everything together and
