From the 7-8 of November, the EU funded project MOSAIC held its kick off meeting in-person in Bari, Italy. MOSAIC (under the Grant Agreement No – LC – 03303874) stands for a Multilingual Multimodal Centralised AI-based Hub for the European Media Content Market and will run for the next 18 months.

What’s MOSAIC?

The MOSAIC project seeks to build a centralised, AI-driven media hub for distributing, accessing, and repurposing multimedia content across Europe.

Bridging Cultural and Language Barriers

MOSAIC aims to tackle the challenge of language diversity in Europe by developing tools for multilingual translation, automatic subtitling, and AI-driven content adaptation. This includes creating translations for less-resourced languages such as Catalan, and Slovenian. With these capabilities, MOSAIC seeks to empower broadcasters and media producers to make their content available to a wider audience, enhancing cultural exchange and unity across Europe.

Key Features and Innovations

The project integrates a range of advanced AI-driven functionalities, including:

  • Automated Multilingual Subtitling: Translations of broadcast content into multiple languages using sophisticated AI, enhancing accessibility for non-native speakers.
  • Enhanced Search and Navigation: Using AI to create a user-friendly platform where users can search multimedia content by keywords, visuals, or context.
  • Content Adaptation and Repurposing: Allows broadcasters to create customised, context-appropriate versions of archival content for new platforms and formats.

Empowering Media Professionals and Content Creators

MOSAIC not only aims to support large broadcasters but also includes smaller regional stations, independent creators, and educational institutions. By offering tools like automatic dubbing, audio description, and content tagging, it seeks to make Europe’s archival content more accessible. Through collaborations with artists and those in the technology field, MOSAIC will explore new media formats, integrating art and technology to push the boundaries of content creation.

Upholding European Values

MOSAIC is designed to align with European values of inclusivity, democracy, and data privacy. It emphasises ethical AI usage, adhering to GDPR guidelines, and promoting linguistic diversity. With accessibility features built-in, the platform is user-centric and aims to create equal access to Europe’s rich media heritage.

Future-Ready Media Hub

As the media landscape continues to evolve, MOSAIC plans to remain relevant by integrating new technologies, including augmented and virtual reality. MOSAIC project’s success will pave the way for a sustainable, resilient media platform that celebrates and preserves the diversity of Europe’s multimedia content.

MOSAIC represents a bold step forward in the European media landscape by combining advanced AI capabilities with Europe’s rich media heritage. MOSAIC seeks to redefine how European citizens access, engage with, and understand multimedia content, creating a truly multilingual and inclusive media experience for all.
