SIRENS<\/em><\/strong> are liminal beings. Between the animal and the human. Between the material body and the imagination. They are also representations of female sexuality, and the power of music to trigger emotions and behaviors. <\/p>\n\n

In this website, we explore the role of music in these liminal spaces. Music has often played a crucial role in understanding the body, mind and emotions, in both animals and humans. Music also allows us to explore the ways in which knowledge circulates in an embodied way, and how it defines sexual and cultural identities and subjectivities, etc.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to the supposed potential of siren songs to bewitch clueless sailors, we could also talk about the supposed capacity of music to alleviate ills or, conversely, to make one ill, of the baroque polyphonic compositions to provoke mystical raptures, of lullabies to alleviate mental illnesses, or of the codes of opera to provoke catharsis…<\/p>\n\n
