Exploring micro-studies of social interaction: History, theoretical stances, and issues of analysis

In this talk I will look first at the beginnings of a tradition of close studies of human interaction that has spanned over 50 years. The research problems and methods that key studies have developed inform a number of different theoretical positions. These have resulted in shifts in research practice in several areas in the study of language and interaction. These shifts have also been facilitated by the rapidly changing technologies for recording social activities as a visual/verbal stream of behavior.  Finally, I will present a brief analysis from my own data, illustrating some concerns about choices of analytic techniques and their consequences.
