Abstract:

The 9th edition of the International Summer Course “Theory, Methods and Applications of Personal Networks” has been held at the UAB, July 3-7, 2017.

In its 9th edition, the summer course has attracted an amazing group of 20 talented participants, 14 PhD students and six PhD holders from UK, Germany, Italy, Poland, Hungary, Ecuador, Peru, United States, Colombia, The Netherlands, Iceland, and Spain. The aim was to enable social science researchers to create, compare and critique personal network research designs while discussing their own research projects. During five days the course consisted of a mix of lectures and computer sessions. Participants had hands-on experience with various programs for the analysis of personal networks, namely Visone, presented by Jürgen Lerner (University of Konstanz), R by Raffaele Vacca (University of Florida), Vennmaker by Ignacio Fradejas-García (Autonomous University of Barcelona), and Egonet by José Luis Molina (Autonomous University of Barcelona). Miranda J. Lubbers (Autonomous University of Barcelona) and Andreas Herz (University of Hildesheim) completed this intense week with theoretical presentations working on name generators and qualitative analysis of personal networks. In addition to the academic activities, a tourist trip was organized following the Roman past of Barcelona, and students enjoyed the nice Catalonian environment and the informal talks during lunch, dinner and leisure time, that were equally important to create synergies and ties. We are sure that the summer course is the beginning of long academic and friendly relationships.
