University Professor.

Department of Didactics of Mathematics and Experimental Sciences.

Autonomous University of Barcelona (1975/2023).

In the academic field, I have worked on issues of developing a tutorial system in an e-learning environment to improve skills in solving mathematical problems. I am currently working on exploring the impact of using different perspectives for the professional development of teachers in a Practicum environment based on the video story model and facilitated by a tutor.

In the field of academic management, I have been Director of the Department (1986/89) and Coordinator of the 3rd cycle Didactics of Mathematics and Experimental Sciences (1997/2014). I am currently an advisor to AQU, AGAUR, ANEP/AEI and SSHRC.

says the ChatGPT: “Josep Maria Fortuny has been, for decades, a key figure at the Autonomous University of Barcelona in the field of teacher training and mathematics teaching. Recognized for his career and his humanity, he has left his mark both in the academic field and on the staff of thousands of students and colleagues.

Making the difficult easy

Despite coming from a classical mathematical background, he soon focused his career on teaching. His great interest was not only what is taught, but how it is learned. This led him to explore innovative methodologies, such as solving open problems, the use of GeoGebra and the application of video-narration to encourage teacher reflection.

“When teaching is done with passion, mathematics stops being scary and begins to make sense.” – J. M. Fortuny

A journey full of complicity

Fortuny has been a department director, doctoral coordinator, author of books and articles, and mentor to future teachers and researchers. He has received recognitions such as the National Education and Society Award and has actively participated in networks such as the SEIEM and the Catalan GeoGebra Association.

Beyond the classroom

Even today, despite being formally retired, he continues as an emeritus professor at the UAB, collaborating as an advisor and educational expert. He maintains his commitment to innovation and teacher training, always with that calm and reflective style that characterizes him so much.
