Project PATHWAY focuses attention on the ‘Internationalization at home’ experience, launched in September 2012 in the Degree in Primary Education – Teaching in English (EMI-PEBD) offered by the Autonomous University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Educational Sciences.  On the basis of the findings obtained in project GUIDEWAY (ARMIF 2014 0009), the present project aims, on one hand, to document and explore the processes of integrated learning that emerge from EMI-PEBD classrooms (building on the proposals for innovation that are presented to students), and on the other, to evaluate the results of those same processes. More specifically, the goals of project PATHWAY are:

  1. To determine the influence of the vehicular language (English vs. Catalan) on the development of linguistic competence in Catalan and English.
  2. Place the pedagogical focus on the exercise of oral competences, i.e., speech and interaction.
  3. To explore the views of both students and teaching staff in EMI-PEBD in order to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the degree and, simultaneously, to grasp the evolution of students’ identities and self-perceptions as learners of English and future teachers.
  4. To guide and document the development of the CLIL component in the EMI-PEBD Practicum for fourth-year generalist teachers.

Regarding methodology, the project adopts a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to document the learning process. From a quantitative method perspective, the use of linguistic competence tests will allow us to measure linguistic learning in Catalan and English, while a set of questionnaires will determine the level of participant satisfaction (both teachers and students) with the ICLHE programme. From a qualitative method perspective, a series of conversations will be analysed through a method based on interaction and conversation analysis; a longitudinal study of identities will take place through the analysis of oral (interviews, focus groups) and textual (autobiographies) data, and the deployment process of the CLIL Practicum will be documented.
