For more than 25 years, the Molecular Microbiology research group at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, recognized as a Consolidated Quality Research Group and currently coordinated by Dr. Susana Campoy, has been conducting research in the field of molecular biology of bacterial pathogens.
The group’s main challenge is to identify new bacterial targets in order to develop alternative strategies that increase the efficiency and diversity of antimicrobial agents available for the treatment of multidrug-resistant pathogens.
The main research lines of the group include the identification and characterization of virulence factors as potential therapeutic targets; phage therapy and the characterization of bacterial resistance to bacteriophages; the determination of mechanisms involved in communication between plasmids and chromosomes; and the functional and evolutionary study of the SOS system and other gene regulatory networks in bacteria.
