FROM LOCAL TO GLOBAL – The role of local communities throughout the Red Sea history
Taking place the 5-7th of June 2024, Barcelona – Spain
The XIth Red Sea Conference will be held between the 5th and the 7th of June of 2024 in Barcelona, being hosted by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (https://webs.uab.cat/redsea11/). Both institutions will be represented by consolidated research projects that have as their main goal the study of the Red Sea in different cultural, chronological, and geographic frames.
This event follows the lead of the previous Red Sea Project conferences, that since 2002 have become the main international forum for the study of the Red Sea as a geographical and historical unit from a broad chronological perspective. Different institutions have hosted the conference since then: the British Museum, the University of Southampton, the University of Exeter, the University of Tabuk, the Università degli Studi di Napoli l’Orientale, the University of Warsaw, the Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée, and the University of Crete. The XIth conference will focus its interest on the peoples and cultures of the Red Sea, reassessing the role of the local communities in its history.
