What is TransDeM?
Transnational Relations, Democratization, and Migration (TransDeM) is a dynamic research group that unites a diverse and international team of researchers.
Our group’s collective mission is to delve into democratization, development, migration, and transnational relations. We are dedicated to unraveling the multifaceted processes of globalization, Europeanization, and their counter-trends, such as democratic backsliding and Euro-scepticism.
Research Focus
While migration remains a central theme in our work, our scientific objective is to embed migration issues in broader academic debates concerning comparative politics, transnational relations, political behavior, and public policy. Our research is particularly concentrated on themes of democratization, regime legitimacy and change, diffusion and transnational relations and networks, EU policies, social cohesion, and protest voting.
Our Approach
We combine different research techniques. Our methodology encompasses qualitative in-depth case studies, ethnographic fieldwork, survey methodology, including survey experiments, and sophisticated statistical analysis using large-N datasets. This extensive toolkit empowers us to conduct research across both democratic and non-democratic contexts, assessing how transnational processes of diffusion, Europeanization, and globalization impact these diverse political landscapes.
