The WEL Project International Event will take place online on 20th November 2025. This event brings together experts and partner initiatives to share the latest results and collaborations in the field of easy audios and easy language. The program includes presentations on Easy Audios for Cultural Visits and Easy Language for Video Games, along with contributions from sister projects including SELSI, ENACT, IDEM, and LECPAT, as well as from the ELIN and AccessCat networks.

Speakers
Carmen Mangiron
Carme Mangiron, PhD, is an associate professor, a member of the research group TransMedia Catalonia at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and a member of the knowledge transfer network AccessCat.
She was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award at UAB in 2022. She has extensive experience as a translator, specializing in software and game localisation.
Her main research areas are game localisation, game accessibility, audiovisual translation and accessibility to the media. She has published extensively in international journals and participated in several national and international research projects. She is co-author of Game Localization: Translating for the Global Digital Entertainment Industry (O’Hagan and Mangiron, 2013), and the main organiser of the Fun for All Conference, about game translation and accessibility, which is held at UAB every two years.
Anna Matamala
Anna Matamala BA in Translation (UAB) and PhD in Applied Linguistics (UPF, Barcelona), is Full Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
Leader of Transmedia Catalonia research group from 2017 until 2025, Anna Matamala has participated (DTV4ALL, ADLAB, HBB4ALL, ACT, ADLAB PRO, IMAC, TRACTION) and led (AVT-LP, ALST, VIW, NEA, EASIT, RAD) funded projects on audiovisual translation and media accessibility.
She is currently involved in the WEL project and is leading the AccessCat network. She has taken an active role in the organisation of scientific events such as the Media for All conference or the Advanced Research Audio Description Seminar ARSAD and has published extensively in international journals such as Meta, The Translator, Perspectives, Babel, Translation Studies, among others. She is the author of a book on interjections and lexicography (IEC, 2005), co-author (with Eliana Franco and Pilar Orero) of a book on voice-over (Peter Lang, 2010), author of a book on audiovisual accessibility and translation (Eumo, 2019), and co-editor of various volumes on audiovisual translation and media accessibility. Joan Coromines Prize in 2005, APOSTA Award to Young Researchers in 2011, Dr. Margaret R. Pfanstiehl Memorial Achievement Award in Audio Description Research and Development 2021.
Her research interests are audiovisual translation and accessibility. She is also actively involved in standardisation work.
Mercedes Suárez de la Torre
Mercedes Suárez de la Torre holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona) and is currently a Full Professor at the Autonomous University of Manizales, Colombia. There, she is Academic Coordinator of the PhD program in Cognitive Sciences and Principal Investigator of the CITERM group. Her research interests focus on cognition and language, as well as translation and terminology.
Tatjana Knapp
Tatjana Knapp is an ethnologist and cultural anthropologist, founder and director of Zavod RISA, a center for general, functional and cultural literacy in Slovenia. She leads and participates in international projects advancing Easy Language and cognitive accessibility (e.g., EASIT, TRAIN2VALIDATE, SELSI, SIMPL4ALL, UNITY, PAGE) and has been a keynote speaker and scientific committee member at the KLAARA conferences.
Veronika Rot
Veronika Rot, BA in Spanish Language and Literature and in Philosophy, is the assistant head of the Access Services Department at RTV Slovenija.
She works as a literary translator from Spanish and Catalan and is an editor of the disability-focused portal Dostopno.si as well as the easy-to-understand news portal Enostavno.info.
She also coordinates the EU-funded project ENACT (Easy-to-Understand News for Collaborative Transformation), which promotes accessible journalism and inclusion through innovative communication practices. She previously worked in a long-term care institution for people with intellectual disabilities as a group habilitator and art therapist, and as a researcher at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Work. A licensed teacher for adult education programs and certified social-care professional, she is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of Ljubljana. Her work has been recognized with several national and professional awards.
Horacio
Horacio Saggion is chair in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Information & Communication Technologies, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Barcelona, Spain.
He was appointed by UPF in 2010 as a Ramón y Cajal research fellow from the Spanish Ministry of Science and he was promoted to full professor in 2021.
Horacio is director of the TALN Natural Language Processing Group where he works in several areas of Natural Language Processing (NLP) automatic text summarization, text simplification, NLP for Sign Languages, information extraction, figurative language, sentiment analysis and related topics. His work combines symbolic and statistical techniques. He has coordinated/participated in projects from different national and international organizations: Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio (Proyecto Simplext 2010-2013), Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, and the European Commission (FP7, CIP, H2020, Horizon Europe). He also collaborates with the industry through contracts, projects and Doctoral PhDs. Horacio is the project coordinator of the Horizon Europe funded project iDEM – Innovative and Inclusive Democratic Spaces for Deliberation and Participation – principal investigator of the Horizon Europe IDEAL project – Inclusive Democratic Engagement and Language Technologies in Europe and co-investigator in the AI-BOOST project.
Ulla Bohman
Ulla Bohman is a Swedish Easy Language Expert. She has a BA in Educational Psychology and Drama. Ulla Bohman has been working with Easy Language, accessible information, intercultural communication and human rights for more than 30 years.
She was the Director of the Easy Language Service at the Swedish Centre for Easy-to-Read and Communication Officer at the Swedish Agency for Accessible Media.
Since 2018 Ulla Bohman has run her own business, Boarve konsult AB, offering training and lectures in Easy Language, accessibility and human rights, and editing services in Easy Language. She is partner in several Swedish as well as European projects and is often asked to give presentations and workshops national and international conferences. Ulla Bohman is an active member of ELIN – the Easy Language International Network.
Carme Pratdesaba
Carme Pratdesaba is a Research Support Technician at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She serves as the Promoter of the AccessCat Network, the Accessibility Innovation Network of Catalonia, which is led by Anna Matamala, main researcher of the TransMedia Catalonia research group. Carme holds a Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and a Master’s degree in Lexicography from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.
