On Wednesday, 11 March, the students of the secondary school “G. B. Vico – Umberto I – R. Gagliardi” in Ragusa met Vincenzo Cascone, who is developing an interesting project – BITUME – about the memories of bitumen extraction and processing in Ragusa. Cascone explained: “Bitume was, above all, an experience. It was born in the wake of FestiWall, the public art festival that for five years animated Ragusa, transforming the city’s walls into a laboratory for reflection on urban space and the common good. With Bitume, the focus shifted to a place suspended in time: the former Antonio Ancione factory. Here, some of the most representative contemporary mural artists engaged with a landscape of industrial archaeology made of abandoned warehouses, silos, and containers. It became an exploration of a material that deeply shaped the history of this territory. ‘Pietra pece’—the asphaltic rock from the Tabuna area—molded the economic and social development of Ragusa, leaving traces in the places and in the memories of the workers who extracted and transformed it.”
