On 17 March, the University of Santiago de Compostela is hosting a conference focused on human mobility caused by climate change. The event is part of the Eco‑RefugLit project, an initiative funded by the Ministry of Science and coordinated by professors Jorge Sacido and Noemí Pereira.
The aim of the project is to analyse, from both an academic and a social perspective, the reality of so‑called “eco‑refugees” and the challenges posed by current international asylum regulations in a context of ongoing environmental degradation.
Marco Armiero‘s speech is titled “The world in a migrant’s cardboard suitcase”. With his words: “Environmental history and migration studies have rarely been brought together. Migration is usually treated as a social process, with the environment reduced to background. Yet migrants are embedded in ecological relations, and the places they move through are socioecological landscapes shaped by power. In this talk, I present my proposal for an environmental humanities approach to migration, building on the volume I co-edited in 2017 and on my empirical research on Italians in the United States.”
