Rural world, energy and the fight for dignity

Colloquium with Jaume Franquesa, professor at the University of Buffalo (New York) and visiting professor of the Master’s in History of Science at the UAB, Pobles Vius, a collective of people and entities concerned about the biogas plant project in la Sentiu de Sió and united by “the desire to live in this land in a dignified and healthy way”, other neighbors of the region and, as always, the attending public.
Jaume Franquesa is an anthropologist specializing in environmental conflicts, history of energy, and the author of the book Power struggles, translated into Spanish as Molinos y gigantes: La lucha por la dignidad, la sobiranía energía y la transición ecológica (“Mills and giants: The struggle for dignity, energy sovereignty, and the ecological transition”). This book, one of the first of its kind internationally, clearly and rigorously demonstrates that no true “green transition” can be dictated by the energy oligopoly and how it is essential to listen to the voices and knowledge of those who inhabit rural areas and refuse to be silenced.

This seminar explores the intersections between reproductive politics, networks and production of knowledge from a historical, sociological and science and technology studies (STS) perspective.
Departing from the notion of reproductive politics, the seminar analyzes activist movements, communication and global market networks that have configured reproductive rights, scientific knowledge of reproduction and access to public health resources. On one hand, feminist and activist networks are studied as forms of organizing, circulating knowledge and doing historical research; on the other hand, the role of reproductive markets, the commercialization of fertility and the global circulation of reproductive cells in the transformation of contemporary reproductive biology is examined.

This international workshop aims to bring to the fore new case studies and historiographical reflections on the social status and the epistemological role of activists in the 20th century. We are particularly interested in the influence of Social Movements Studies (SMS) on History of Science, and on the transition between STS and SMS. Analytical concepts such as contentious knowledge and politics, mobilized publics, resistance, protests, repression and counterhegemony, among many others, will be particularly relevant.
Precirculated papers will be discussed in person during the workshop for the preparation of a future collective publication. Everybody is very welcome to join us in the audience.

Després d’uns anys voltant per Portugal, el cicle «Ciència, Tecnologia i Medicina a les Places» torna a Barcelona. Des del 2012, ha estat un espai de trobada d’activistes i acadèmiques amb mirades afins i amb mires a la transformació social (https://schct.iec.cat/ciencia-a-les-places; https://schct.iec.cat/sisena-sessio). S’hi han abordat temes com la transsexualitat, les tecnologies antiimmigració, els transgènics, l’energia nuclear o la mineria de l’urani. Les sessions volen servir per a compartir experiències i entendre com els sabers comunitaris, veïnals i activistes dialoguen, es tensionen, es nodreixen amb els coneixements experts (inclosos els historiogràfics) i són fonamentals per a produir justícia social (en particular, mobility justice, en termes de Mimi Sheller).
Aquesta sessió és part del cicle «Ciència, Tecnologia i Medicina a les Places», un espai de trobada d’activistes i acadèmiques amb mirades afins i amb mires a la transformació social. Enguany, està dedicada a la bicicleta i les participants ens parlaran de tres eines claus per a afrontar els debats actuals sobre sostenibilitat, urbanisme i dret a la ciutat:
- Els history labs com a vies de co-creació d’història i projecció de futur més enllà de l’acadèmia
- Els mobility studies com a noves cruïlles interdisciplinàries de la història de la ciència
- Els sabers activistes i la resistència creativa de moviments socials que han confrontat la mirada experta mentre produïen nous imaginaris i realitats sociotècniques.
