The Laboratory of Archaeozoology is the result of the growth, development and specialization of the lines of research in archaeozoology that were part of the “Laboratory of Human Palaeoeconomy and Palaeocology” that Dr. Jordi Estévez organized in 1985 with the funding of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the project with Dr. Miquel Barceló “Development of livestock from the beginning to the Middle Ages in the Levante Peninsular”, and in collaboration with the Barcelona Zoo and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Soon, in 1990, the laboratory was established as an Archaeological Analysis Service, integrating the different lines of research of the laboratory that, today, continue to make up the Archaeological Analysis Service, although as independent specialized laboratories (Service of Archaeozoological Analysis)
Since 1984, Archaeozoology classes have been taught at the UAB, which have been integrated into the training curriculum of the Degree in Archaeology and the Official master’s degree in Prehistoric Archaeology and Antiquity and the Middle Ages under the umbrella of the subject of Bioarchaeology. which incorporates theoretical-practical classes at different levels in the classroom and in the laboratory.
